Manchester United Target Tchouameni Amid Real Madrid Midfield Changes

Aurelien Tchouameni spent last season looking like the adult in the room in a Real Madrid midfield that often lost its shape and its bite. Now, the one consistent performer in that engine room finds himself at the centre of a tug of war that could reshape two European giants.

With Jose Mourinho overseeing a ruthless overhaul at the Santiago Bernabeu, Manchester United have moved to the front of the queue for the Frenchman, sensing an opening at exactly the moment their own midfield has been stripped bare.

United move fast after Casemiro exit

Casemiro’s move to Inter Miami has left a sizeable hole at Old Trafford. United need a new anchor, and they want it to be elite. According to Jose Felix Diaz, speaking on Ruben Martin’s livestream, the club are ready to commit serious money and a five-year contract to Tchouameni.

He was not their first choice. United had lined up Mateus Fernandes, only to see the Portuguese midfielder slip through their fingers and sign for Tottenham from West Ham. That miss has sharpened their focus. The search has narrowed, and Tchouameni now sits at the top of their list.

Initial contacts are expected in the coming days. Any agreement would rank among the biggest deals of the window, both in fee and significance. United are not circling; they are preparing a direct approach.

Tchouameni’s dilemma: Bernabeu status vs Premier League stage

On the pitch, Tchouameni did little wrong last season. In a campaign where Real Madrid’s midfield often looked tired or unbalanced, the 24-year-old stood out for his control, his reading of danger and his ability to dictate tempo. He has made it clear he is happy in Madrid and wants to stay.

But the landscape around him is shifting.

Real Madrid are expected to bring in another central midfielder this summer, with Enzo Fernandez identified as a prime target. More competition in an already crowded department could squeeze minutes and influence, especially under a manager as ruthless as Mourinho when it comes to squad hierarchy.

At United, the picture is different. A five-year deal at Old Trafford would likely come with guaranteed prominence and responsibility. A marquee role in a rebuilding side, in a league that amplifies every performance. For a player entering his prime, that sort of platform is hard to ignore.

For now, his focus is forced elsewhere. Tchouameni is managing an injury as France prepare for their quarterfinal against Morocco, having picked up a knock before the Round of 16 tie with Paraguay. He is a doubt, with Manu Kone ready to step in if needed. The timing is awkward: a transfer storm gathering while his body fights to be ready for the next knockout match.

Once the international duty clears and the medical reports settle, the decision will move quickly from theoretical to real.

Arbeloa’s Fulham rebuild points straight back to Madrid

While Mourinho redraws Real Madrid from the dugout, another former Bernabeu figure is plotting his own Premier League project with a distinctly familiar flavour.

Alvaro Arbeloa, freshly appointed Fulham manager on a three-year contract, is already looking towards his old club. According to Nizaar Kinsella on BBC Sport, the Spaniard wants three Madrid players for his first squad at Craven Cottage: Franco Mastantuono, Fran Garcia and Gonzalo Garcia.

The plan is clear: one loan, two permanent deals. Fulham intend to bring Mastantuono on loan, while pushing to sign Fran and Gonzalo outright.

Arbeloa’s logic is obvious. He knows the club, he knows the training ground standards, and he knows the personalities. A coach walking into a new dressing room often leans on players he already trusts to carry his ideas, especially in a league as unforgiving as the Premier League.

But what looks straightforward from London becomes far more complex in Madrid.

Three players, three very different calls

Real Madrid cannot treat the three cases as a package.

Fran Garcia is the simplest file on the desk. The left-back has been heavily linked with Real Betis, with a €4 million deal already in motion and close to completion. The arrival of Marc Cucurella and the presence of Alvaro Carreras have effectively shut the door on Fran’s playing time at the Bernabeu. From Madrid’s side, a sale makes sporting and financial sense, whether the destination is Betis or a late move from Fulham.

The other two are more delicate.

Gonzalo Garcia and Mastantuono are currently in Mourinho’s plans, at least through pre-season. The Portuguese coach wants a proper look at both before he signs off on any exit. That stance immediately complicates Fulham’s hopes of quick progress.

For Mastantuono, a loan to the Premier League could be attractive. Regular minutes in England at a young age would offer a steep but valuable education, especially if Real Madrid feel his pathway to the first team is temporarily blocked. A season under a coach who understands Madrid’s standards could accelerate his development rather than stall it.

Gonzalo is another matter. Selling a talented young forward is a different decision entirely. Any permanent move would have to align with Madrid’s long-term squad planning and valuation. If Fulham want him outright, they will need to convince a club that rarely lets high-upside assets walk cheaply or easily.

The upside for Madrid? Having a trusted former player in a Premier League dugout who actively wants their fringe and emerging talents. That kind of relationship can unclog squad bottlenecks and provide high-level minutes without losing control of a player’s future.

Now the questions sit with Madrid’s hierarchy. How much risk are they willing to take with Tchouameni’s status and the next wave of talent? And how far will they let the Premier League shape the spine of their present and their future?
