Liverpool's Transfer Activity Heats Up as Deadline Approaches

Liverpool’s quiet window has suddenly caught fire.

Within a few hours, Andoni Iraola’s side have reportedly tied up a second deal, sharpening their squad just as the transfer deadline looms on Tuesday.

Liverpool move again as deadline nears

The club have spent most of this window hunting for a new left-winger to step into the void left by Mohamed Salah. Bradley Barcola has emerged as the headline target, with talks described last week as moving at pace and an expectation that a deal could be wrapped up before the window shuts.

Ismaila Sarr has also entered the frame, with the winger identified as a secondary option in the build-up to Saturday’s draw with Nottingham Forest. The wide areas are clearly the priority. Iraola has said as much.

But Liverpool are not stopping there.

Earlier on Monday, reports surfaced that the Reds had agreed a £30 million fee with Genk for goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans, a significant outlay for a position that already looked relatively stable from the outside. It underlined the club’s willingness to act decisively when they see long-term value.

Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have followed that move by reaching an agreement to sign Saint-Etienne striker Djylian N'Guessan.

N’Guessan lined up as long-term project

N'Guessan, just 18, has reportedly been given permission to undergo a medical ahead of the deadline. The plan is not an immediate impact at Anfield, though. He is expected to link up with the Liverpool squad in the summer of 2027, a slow-burn investment rather than a quick fix.

With his contract at Saint-Etienne due to expire next summer, French outlet Foot Mercato previously reported that the Ligue 2 side had already “opened the door” to his departure. Liverpool have stepped through it, adding another highly rated youngster to a growing pool of prospects.

He will join a cluster of emerging talents being assembled with one eye firmly on the future, even as the club works to refresh the first team in the here and now.

Iraola’s wider rebuild takes shape

The flurry of activity fits with Iraola’s recent hints that Liverpool’s plans stretch beyond simply landing a winger.

“In the end there are certain things that you can do, certain things that we don’t know if we can do,” he said when pressed on the club’s priorities. “It’s true that the priority has been to strengthen in the wide areas. Still we have four, five days, I’m sure if we can improve other areas, we will, but I don’t know how the market is going to finish.

“I cannot tell you. I have to be patient, the same as you. I want to know, believe me. It’s very uncomfortable for me. You are dealing with uncertainties all the time.”

Those uncertainties are starting to clear. A new goalkeeper lined up. A teenage striker secured for the long term. Two winger targets in play.
