Everton have crashed into the final hours of the European transfer window with a bold move for Folarin Balogun, throwing fresh drama into Monaco’s plans and, unexpectedly, into Mexican football as well.

The Merseyside club have lodged a formal bid for the United States international, as reported by Fabrizio Romano and Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, and the player is keen. At 25 and with Arsenal in his past, Balogun is looking favourably at a return to English football. He has already given the green light on personal terms with Everton. Now it is down to the clubs.

Balogun, for his part, has yet to play a single official minute for Monaco this Ligue 1 season. After featuring for the USMNT at the World Cup in the summer, he focused on his physical preparation while his camp and the club worked behind the scenes to find him a top-level destination. That destination now looks increasingly like Merseyside—if the numbers line up.

Balogun’s future is not just a story between England and France. It has a direct knock-on effect in Mexico.

Monaco need to free up a non-EU squad slot, and Balogun’s departure is the key that unlocks it. Only then can they complete the signing of Erik Lira from Cruz Azul. The French club and the Mexican side already have an agreement in place for the midfielder’s transfer, but the deal is stuck in administrative limbo until Monaco clear that foreign-player space.

The emergence of young German forward Paris Brunner has given Monaco fresh options up front, which only strengthens their resolve to prioritise Balogun’s exit.
