Chelsea’s frontline featuring Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Joao Pedro has caught many eyes this season. Blues legend Ruud Gullit shared his views exclusively with GOAL on whether this trio forms the league’s most potent attacking force.

After yet another summer of heavy spending at Stamford Bridge and a fresh managerial shift, Chelsea certainly possess plenty of firepower. Palmer, known for his 25 goals in his debut season and success in the Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup, had a tough 2025-26 campaign that saw him miss out on England’s World Cup squad. Rumors swirled about a potential move back to Manchester United, but Palmer remains tied down by a long contract and seems reinvigorated now that close friend and fellow Manchester City academy graduate Morgan Rogers has joined him in London.

Xabi Alonso has slotted Palmer and Rogers in behind Brazilian forward Pedro, who also missed World Cup selection and appears eager to prove himself. Chelsea have started the 2026-27 season with nine goals from three matches across the Premier League and Carabao Cup, with many tipping them as serious challengers to champions Arsenal.

Gullit’s Take on Chelsea’s Attack

“The short answer is yes. You can see Chelsea’s potential, but it’s more about Alonso’s collective philosophy,” said Gullit. “They played three at the back against Fulham, but I saw a very strong midfield with Palmer enjoying freedom without Enzo Fernandez, which is a bit controversial right now. Chelsea have a very strong side.”

Gullit expressed some reservations about the roles of veterans Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson, feeling experienced players should be starters rather than occasional squad members meant mainly to boost morale during tough runs.

“Palmer will want revenge after missing the World Cup. England did well reaching the semi-final, but if Palmer had been there under proper discipline, he could have shone. He’s shown readiness for the new challenge immediately. There was talk of him leaving for Manchester United last year, but he stayed, so this season is important for him.”

The absence of European competition means Palmer and company must perform consistently in the league. Gullit hopes any frustration Palmer feels over the World Cup snub benefits Chelsea as they iron out player issues.

Defensive Concerns Remain

While the attack looks promising, defense is Chelsea’s main worry after conceding five goals in their first two league games. The signing of World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emi Martinez aims to bolster the backline. If the defense tightens, the threat posed by Palmer, Rogers, and Pedro should help the Blues collect valuable points.

Chelsea’s next test comes on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium against title holders Arsenal, marking an early big challenge after the transfer window closed.
