Liverpool’s summer planning has taken a clear turn out wide – and one name has moved firmly into the frame.

Liverpool have agreed personal terms “in principle” with Bournemouth forward Rayan, contingent on the south coast club deciding to cash in on the 19-year-old attacker in this window.

A well-placed source on X has urged supporters to watch the situation closely, with Liverpool working on Rayan while also pursuing Bradley Barcola at PSG. The message is simple: the club want a new wide threat, and they’re already deep into the groundwork.

Rayan’s case is compelling. Thrown into the Premier League as a teenager, the Brazilian produced seven goal contributions – five goals and two assists – in just 15 games in his first half-season. In a campaign that often suffocated wingers, with the league tilting towards physical battles and set-piece dominance, his numbers stand out.

He operates mainly off the right, exactly where Liverpool’s long-term planning has to bite. At 19, he’s raw, but he’s already shown he can hurt Premier League defences, find space in tight games and adapt to the pace of the division. That profile, age and output explain why Liverpool are moving early.

Market tightening, options narrowing

Liverpool’s recruitment team know the market is shrinking quickly. Yan Diomande, viewed by many clubs as further along in his development after a year in Germany, is reportedly Real Madrid-bound. PSG, meanwhile, are pushing to bring in Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche.

As those targets slide away, the tier of available wingers drops. If Liverpool miss out on both Rayan and Barcola, the shortlist starts to look thinner, with names such as Yankuba Minteh and Matias Fernandez-Pardo representing the next rung down in terms of profile and excitement.

That is the backdrop to Liverpool’s urgency. They cannot afford to drift into late August scrambling for a wide player who doesn’t quite fit the level or the long-term plan.

Barcola priority, budget reality

Inside the club, Bradley Barcola remains at the forefront of Richard Hughes’ thinking. Liverpool see him as a primary target and have a deal mapped out if negotiations with PSG open up in the right way.

What they will not do is attempt a double swoop for both Barcola and Rayan. The admiration is there, but the finances are not. Last summer’s heavy spending, which delivered record-breaking deals for Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak in the same window, is not expected to be repeated.

Liverpool are operating under a tighter budget this time and must also leave room to strengthen elsewhere in the squad before the 2026/27 season. That reality makes a choice in the wide areas inevitable: Barcola as the headline move if PSG talks allow it, or Rayan as a sharp, high-upside solution if Bournemouth open the door.

The strategy is clear. The money will not stretch to everything, so Liverpool have to pick the winger who will define the next phase of their attack.
