Liverpool Negotiating Loan Move for Harvey Elliott to Valencia

Liverpool are in talks with Valencia over a loan move for Harvey Elliott as the transfer window ticks towards Tuesday night’s deadline.

The 23-year-old has drawn interest from several clubs over the summer, but it is the La Liga side who have moved to the front of the queue ahead of the 11pm cut-off on September 1. Discussions are now under way over a deal that would take him to Mestalla for the season.

Elliott is understood to have already spoken with Valencia head coach Carlos Corberan about his prospective role in Spain, with the conversation centring on regular minutes and a clearly defined position in Corberan’s system. Any loan is expected to be tied to a Liverpool contract extension, a move designed to protect the value of a player whose current deal runs until the summer of 2028.

His situation at Anfield has drifted into uncertainty under new head coach Andoni Iraola. Elliott has yet to make a match-day squad this season and is again staring at the prospect of another year on the fringes if he stays put.

That was the story at Aston Villa last term. He spent most of the campaign at Villa Park but barely featured. A late cameo in Liverpool’s 3-2 win at Newcastle a year ago locked him in for the season and prevented a second move in the January window, but it did little to kick-start his career.

Villa, for their part, were careful. An obligation to buy at £35m would have been triggered had Elliott reached 10 appearances, and the Midlands club were determined not to cross that threshold. While Unai Emery’s side went on to lift the Europa League, Elliott watched the surge from the periphery, a Europa League winner in name but not in rhythm.

He returned to Liverpool in the summer and joined the pre-season tour of the United States, still searching for clarity. After a 1-0 win over Wrexham in New York on July 30, he spoke openly about the crossroads in front of him.

“I think I need to be more kind of cautious of my decisions,” he admitted. “Ultimately, I'm still wanting to be selfish, within that aspect of doing what's right for me, and whether I'm staying here and fighting for my place, or whether that's potentially going elsewhere, I'm still unsure at this moment in time until I get some more intel."

Liverpool expected Valencia to firm up their interest before the weekend. That call has now come, and talks over a loan are active as the window enters its final days.

Elliott joined his boyhood club from Fulham in the summer of 2019 and has already racked up 149 appearances in red. The next move, whether it takes him to Mestalla or keeps him on Merseyside, will go a long way to deciding what those next 149 look like.
