Colombia Defeats Ghana to Secure Last-16 Spot
Colombia did it the hard way. Dominant, inventive, and often wasteful, they still found enough in Kansas City to squeeze past a blunt Ghana side 1-0 at Arrowhead Stadium and clinch the final ticket to the World Cup last 16.
Final Score: Colombia 1 - 0 Ghana
A frantic opening, then Colombian control
Ghana actually landed the first punch. With barely a minute gone, Thomas Partey stepped into space and ripped a low drive just past the post. It was the kind of effort that can tilt an occasion, a warning shot that crackled with intent.
That was as good as it got for Ghana.
Colombia shook off the scare, took the ball and barely gave it back. Their passing settled, their lines pushed high, and the game began to tilt relentlessly towards the Ghanaian penalty area. The South Americans carved out angles, moved the ball with confidence and forced their opponents deeper and deeper.
The pressure told quickly. Arias struck early, capitalising on Colombia’s bright start to give them the lead and, on the balance of play, exactly what they deserved. From there, the pattern felt set: yellow shirts probing, black shirts hanging on.
Injuries disrupt the rhythm
The night was not without anxiety for Colombia. Jhon Cordoba, central to their attacking plan, pulled up with what looked like a groin problem and had to come off, an unwelcome sight with the knockout phase looming. Luis Suarez was thrown into the action earlier than expected, asked to pick up the thread of an attack already humming.
Ghana suffered a blow of their own soon after. Marvin Senaya went down and could not continue, forcing Alidu Seidu into the fray. For a side already struggling to establish any rhythm, another reshuffle only added to the disjointed feel of their performance.
Wasteful winners, toothless losers
Colombia kept coming. They worked good positions, stretched the pitch, and repeatedly found space between the lines. What they did not find was the ruthless finish to match their superiority. Chances came and went, attacks fizzled at the final pass or the final touch. The scoreline stubbornly refused to move.
Ghana, chasing a result they never truly looked like earning, offered little beyond that early Partey sighter. The longer the game went on, the more their attacks broke down before reaching dangerous areas. Colombia’s back line stayed largely untroubled, their goalkeeper more spectator than saviour.
For all Colombia’s control, the single-goal margin kept a sliver of jeopardy alive. One mistake, one moment of inspiration, and Ghana could have turned the night on its head. That moment never arrived.
Switzerland awaits
When the whistle finally went, Colombia had what they came for: a win, a clean sheet, and a place in the last 16. They leave Kansas City knowing they imposed themselves, knowing they also left goals on the pitch.
Next up is Switzerland in Vancouver on Tuesday, a step up in technical quality and tactical discipline. Colombia will need sharper finishing and a fit squad to match their ambition.
They have cleared the first hurdle. The question now is whether this was just a stuttering start—or a sign that wastefulness might yet catch up with them on the World Cup stage.
