Xavi Retains Ruud van Nistelrooy in Netherlands Coaching Staff as New Era Begins

Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue his role within the Netherlands national team’s coaching staff under the new head coach, Xavi Hernandez. The former Oranje striker's presence provides valuable continuity as the Dutch Football Association shapes the backroom team for this new chapter.

According to Dutch source Algemeen Dagblad, Van Nistelrooy impressed during the 2026 World Cup and is expected to stay on. Alongside him, goalkeeping coach Patrick Lodewijks, who has been with the squad since early 2023, will also remain part of the setup under Xavi’s leadership.

Xavi’s Connection to Dutch Football Philosophy

The ex-Barcelona manager shared his pride in becoming the Netherlands head coach, highlighting his deep ties to the Total Football style. In an official KNVB statement, he said:

I find it an enormous honour to become the national coach of the Dutch team. As someone who was educated at the FC Barcelona academy, with strong influences from the likes of Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, I feel a special connection with Dutch football.

You could say that I am a bit of a son of Dutch football. Other great managers, especially Louis van Gaal, under whom I made my debut at Barcelona, and Frank Rijkaard, have also played an important role in shaping me as a player and coach. Of course, the most important goal is and always will be to win, but I would prefer to do so in a way that reflects those characteristics and that people can enjoy. The potential for that is there, as well as a solid foundation to build upon.

New Leadership for Oranje

The appointment of the 46-year-old marks a fresh start for the Dutch side, with Xavi signing a contract through 2030 that covers both Euro 2028 and the World Cup in 2030. He follows Ronald Koeman, who left after the team's round-of-32 exit to Morocco at the World Cup. Xavi becomes the 21st foreign manager in Dutch history and the first since Ernst Happel’s brief spell from 1977 to 1978.

Upcoming Challenges for Xavi

Xavi will make his debut as the Netherlands boss when they face Germany in the UEFA Nations League on September 24 at the Johan Cruyff Arena. This tough opener will quickly reveal his tactical approach and squad dynamics. Following Germany, Oranje will play Serbia and Greece in the same competition, offering further chances to test consistency.
