Colin Hendry Struggles to Explain How to Stop Erling Haaland, Compares Him to Ronaldo

Colin Hendry, former Manchester City defender, recently shared his thoughts on how he might try to stop Erling Haaland, but admitted the task is almost impossible. In an exclusive interview with GOAL, Hendry described the prolific striker as a unique challenge for defenders.

How to Defend Against Haaland?

When asked about Haaland's weaknesses, Hendry gave a blunt response: "F*ck knows!" He referenced Arsenal centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes, who has come closest to containing Haaland in several Premier League clashes.

"I would just try and rumble him up," Hendry said. "I've spoken before about 1998 and Ronaldo, and while Haaland isn't exactly like that Ronaldo, there's a similarity in what defenders face."

Hendry compared the experience of defending Haaland to facing a "juggernaut," likening it to his own battles against Ronaldo back in 1998. He noted that Haaland stands out even among great strikers such as Luis Suarez, Sergio Aguero, and Romario.

His old-school approach suggests trying to unsettle Haaland physically and mentally, testing his reactions to pressure. Hendry questioned whether current defenders have the same fitness and physicality required for such confrontations but expressed hope they rise to the challenge.

Haaland is back in training for the 2026-27 season under new manager Enzo Maresca, following Pep Guardiola’s departure. The striker is expected to feature in the upcoming Community Shield match against Arsenal in Cardiff on August 16, ahead of the Premier League opener versus Bournemouth on August 23.
