World Cup Day 5 Highlights and Day 6 Preview
Day 5 Overview
The World Cup continued with a rare sight on Monday—four matches all ending in draws. No winners, no losers, just shared points. That might sound boring at first glance, but these games had plenty to offer, from Cape Verde's resilient defense against Spain to the intense battle between Iran and New Zealand late into the night. Every team walked away with something valuable.
Spain 0-0 Cape Verde (Group H)
No goals, but Cape Verde impressed by absorbing pressure from one of the tournament favorites. Despite surrendering 74% possession and falling behind in expected goals 2.16 to 0.28, their defensive effort was extraordinary. They committed only a single foul and managed to frustrate Spain’s attack throughout. This result might shake up the group, increasing the chances of a Spain-Argentina meeting in the Round of 16. Defend-and-counter may get some new fans after this.
Belgium 1-1 Egypt (Group G)
Belgium showed signs of weakness compared to previous squads, as Mohamed Salah’s Egypt made them work hard. Emam Ashour’s powerful strike gave Egypt the lead early, while Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku, looking a bit bulkier than before, helped force an own goal to equalize. Both sides look strong contenders for Group G’s top spot, though it’s hard to predict which will come out ahead.
Saudi Arabia 1-1 Uruguay (Group H)
This match brought plenty of physicality and rough tackles, nearly spiraling out of control. Saudi Arabia’s Al Amri scored first, but Uruguay’s Araújo leveled things late. Uruguay seemed like the better team on paper, but their frantic style didn’t fully pay off here. With every team in Group H tied at one point, the standings are wide open. Rodrigo Bentancur worked hard but didn’t make a decisive impact.
Iran 2-2 New Zealand (Group G)
Iran and New Zealand delivered one of the day’s most exciting encounters. Iranian fans packed SoFi Stadium with strong support, despite the team’s challenges, including many players inactive since their league paused in February. New Zealand’s Elijah Just stole the show with two goals, tying him for the Golden Boot lead. Iran fought back twice and nearly snatched a late win. Not perfect football, but thrilling enough to keep fans awake.
