Eva Carneiro Responds to Mourinho and Terry's Claims in Netflix Documentary

Eva Carneiro has reignited her long‑running dispute with José Mourinho and John Terry, hitting back after the pair revisited the incident that ended her Chelsea career 11 years ago.

Their comments appear in the new Netflix documentary "Mourinho," where the former Chelsea manager again insists Carneiro and then-head physio Jon Fearn were wrong to enter the pitch to treat Eden Hazard during a 2-2 draw with Swansea City in August 2015.

Carneiro’s response was swift – and pointed.

“11 years on and here we are reliving the worst. Hope they made some money,” she posted on X, making clear what she thought of the decision to reopen the controversy.

Carneiro: ‘Learn the rules of the game’

Terry, Chelsea’s captain that day, backed Mourinho’s version in the documentary, saying there had been an understanding between players and medical staff that they would not come onto the pitch unless an injury was “really, really bad.”

Carneiro took direct aim at that claim.

“We are bound by a medico-legal code of conduct,” she wrote. “Genuinely it would be healthy for John Terry to learn the rules of the game. It’s been long enough mate.”

She also shared a statement from the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine, which underlined that club medics have an “absolute duty of care” to attend and assess a player when the referee calls them on.

Carneiro then laid out her version of the key moments in that chaotic finale against Swansea.

“So IT IS really simple. Referee Michael Oliver called us on TWICE, player Eden Hazard requested medical assistance we then made eye contact from side line and he confirmed he needed medical assistance, TWICE.

“At that point my hands are bound as a medical professional.”

The flashpoint that changed everything

The incident came in the closing stages of Chelsea’s opening Premier League fixture of the 2015-16 season. Thibaut Courtois had already been sent off. When Carneiro and Fearn ran on to treat Hazard, the Belgian was required by the laws of the game to leave the pitch, leaving Chelsea briefly down to nine men.

Mourinho exploded on the touchline. Days later he publicly labelled Carneiro and Fearn “impulsive and naive” and said they did not “understand the game.”

In the documentary, he doubles down.

“I’m not a doctor but my eyes know when a player is injured and when a player is not injured,” Mourinho says. “I knew Eden was not injured but the doctors went on to the pitch and we were left with nine players.

“For me, a lady doctor is the same as a man doctor. So, as always, I used my vocabulary when I’m not happy.

“There are words in moments where the tension is very, very high.

“Normally, people with football culture, with football DNA or with a football background get over it in one second. In that case, it was different.”

Terry backs him up in the film.

“Medically, José would say unless it’s really, really bad, then they’re not coming on,” the former defender says. “That was the understanding of us as players, the medical staff, everyone bought into that.

“It was a big moment obviously and he took a lot of backlash for that.”

Legal battle and lingering scars

The backlash inside the club was immediate – but it was Carneiro and Fearn who paid the price. Both were removed from first-team duties after the Swansea game. Carneiro left Chelsea the following month and launched legal proceedings against the club for constructive dismissal, along with a separate claim against Mourinho.

The case went to an employment tribunal and was settled in June 2016. Chelsea issued an apology to Carneiro as part of that resolution. Mourinho never did so publicly.

The Football Association had already cleared him in September 2015 of making discriminatory comments towards her during the incident. Less than three months after that, with Chelsea’s title defence in ruins, he was sacked.

A decade on, the fallout clearly hasn’t healed. The documentary has dragged an old wound back into the spotlight, and Carneiro has made it plain she will not let her side of the story be rewritten.
