Marcus Rashford's Return to Manchester United: A New Chapter

Marcus Rashford is set to step back into a Manchester United shirt for the first time since December 2024 – and the twist is hard to ignore. Waiting in the opposite dugout this weekend is Ruben Amorim, the coach who froze him out, now in charge of AC Milan.

United, under Michael Carrick, head to Poland for their final pre-season friendly, a game that suddenly carries more intrigue than a routine summer tune-up usually deserves. For Rashford, this is billed as the first real step towards a rebuilt future at his boyhood club.

He watched from the sidelines in Dublin on Wednesday as United drew 1-1 with Leeds United. Carrick explained that the match came too early not only for Rashford, but also for Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo.

“Marcus, Licha and Kobbie only came back a couple of days ago so they're not quite ready but we can have them for the weekend,” Carrick said, outlining the plan. The trio have been pushed hard in training since returning. “We trained hard, the boys who came in, Marcus, Kobbie and Licha have trained really hard and we'll have a recovery day tomorrow.

“We'll all recover tomorrow, train Friday and prepare for the game on Saturday [against Milan]. Again, we'll get the balance right of minutes."

That balance is crucial. Rashford has been away on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona since his last United outing, his Old Trafford story effectively put on pause. Now he re-enters the picture against Amorim, whose decision to move him out in the first place helped shape that journey. It’s only a friendly on paper; for Rashford, the sub-plot runs deeper.

Carrick is expected to manage his returning stars carefully. Rashford, Martinez and Mainoo are likely to come off the bench in Poland, handled in the same measured way as those who featured at the World Cup earlier in the summer. Minutes matter, but so does timing.

There are other selection headaches. Mason Mount, Harry Maguire and Benjamin Sesko are all doubts after missing the Leeds game, leaving Carrick to juggle options in key areas. The upside is in midfield, where Bruno Fernandes and new signing Youri Tielemans could finally start together for the first time, a potential partnership United fans have been eager to see.

Up front, the picture is less settled. Matheus Cunha made his first appearance of pre-season in midweek, immediately nudging the pecking order. Patrick Dorgu and Amad Diallo have been tasked with supporting lone striker Bryan Mbeumo so far, but Cunha’s return gives Carrick a genuine decision to make about his focal point in attack.

One more friendly, one more dress rehearsal. For United it’s about rhythm and sharpness before the real stuff begins. For Rashford, it feels like something else entirely: the start of a new chapter, written in the shadow of the coach who once sent him away.
