Tragedy in Ciudad Rodrigo: Fountain Collapse During World Cup Celebration

Spain’s night of glory ended in silence in a small Castilian town.

While the country poured into streets and plazas to celebrate a dramatic World Cup triumph over Argentina, a 13-year-old boy was killed when part of a fountain collapsed in Salamanca province, turning a night of joy into one of grief.

The accident happened in Ciudad Rodrigo, where young fans had climbed into and onto the Árbol Gordo fountain to revel in Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory. Around 00:30 local time (23:30 BST), a section of the structure gave way.

Emergency services in Castilla y León said several calls came in reporting the collapse. When responders arrived, they found three young people hurt. The 13-year-old could not be saved. Two others were injured, including a child taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg.

The scenes stood in stark contrast to the rest of the country, where Ferran Torres’ extra-time winner had unleashed a wave of celebration. Spain’s victory over Argentina delivered a second World Cup title, adding 2024 to the golden memory of 2010 and sending millions into the streets draped in red and yellow.

In Ciudad Rodrigo, though, the noise stopped quickly.

“What was supposed to be a celebration for the victory in the Spanish National Football Team's World Cup has turned into a tragedy,” the town hall wrote on social media, capturing the sudden, brutal shift in mood.

Local media reported that part of the fountain’s structure collapsed after several people climbed onto it in the aftermath of the final. The city council later expressed its support for those caught up in the incident and said it “hopes for a speedy recovery of the others who have been affected by the incident”.

On a night when Spain reclaimed its place at the summit of world football, one provincial town woke up not to hang flags from balconies, but to count the cost of a celebration that went fatally wrong.
