Next International Break and Changes to September-October Schedule for 2026

Next International Break Scheduled for Late September to Early October 2026

Following the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the usual separate international breaks in September and October have been merged into a single extended period. This new break will run from September 21, 2026 through October 6, 2026.

This longer window allows national teams to schedule up to four matches during these 16 days, offering a rare opportunity for coaches to spend more time working directly with their squads.

Why Were the September and October Breaks Combined?

Traditionally, FIFA’s international calendar featured one week each in September and October for international fixtures. The change for 2026 comes after the World Cup expanded to include 48 teams, stretching over six weeks during the summer.

With such an extensive tournament, FIFA aimed to give players additional recovery time and help them reintegrate with their club teams before returning to international duty. By merging the two breaks, players and coaches benefit from a longer uninterrupted period to prepare and compete internationally.

What About November 2026?

The usual international break remains intact in November, running from November 9 to November 17, 2026. During this time, national teams worldwide can meet for up to two matches.

Looking Ahead to 2030

As the 2026 cycle closes, attention turns to the next World Cup set for Spain, Portugal, and Morocco in 2030. This new international break format offers national federations a fresh start as they begin preparations for the upcoming tournament.
