Real Madrid wanted to glide into the new Champions League league phase. Instead, they arrive at the Santiago Bernabéu bruised by a 1-0 defeat to Real Betis and staring at a selection headache that cuts straight through the heart of José Mourinho’s midfield.

Inter Milan come to Madrid at 9 p.m. CEST with momentum and, crucially, with far fewer problems. On paper, they travel lighter. On the pitch, they could be heavier favourites than many expected a few weeks ago.

The Frenchman has been nursing a muscular problem and is listed as a doubt. He could make it back in time, yet Mourinho has not guaranteed a starting role. His presence would change the entire shape and balance of Real’s midfield; his absence would turn an already awkward puzzle into something close to a crisis.

Endrick is also in that grey area. Officially injured, the forward has missed the opening matches with a muscular issue and remains uncertain for this one. Even if he makes the squad, his condition will be under scrutiny.

For a Champions League opener against an opponent as structured and aggressive as Inter, Real Madrid’s margin for error is shrinking by the day.

Inter arrive almost at full strength

Across the technical area, Cristian Chivu’s situation looks far more comfortable.

UEFA list no confirmed absentees for Inter Milan. Only one concern shadows their preparations: Federico Dimarco. The wing-back suffered a knee problem in Serie A action against Napoli and is a doubt for the trip to Madrid.

Dimarco’s role on the left is central to Inter’s width and delivery. If he fails his fitness test, Chivu will have to remodel that flank, potentially altering the dynamic of Inter’s attacks. But that is one problem, not eight.

UEFA’s latest predicted lineups suggest a tactical mirror at the Bernabéu: both sides setting up with three central defenders.

For Real Madrid, Mourinho is tipped to go 3-5-2. Thibaut Courtois is expected in goal, protected by a back three of Ibrahima Konaté, Antonio Rüdiger and Dean Huijsen.

Across midfield, the projected five are Denzel Dumfries, Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham, Brahim Díaz and Marc Cucurella. It is an intriguing blend of energy, creativity and improvisation, forced by circumstance as much as design.
