Southampton under pressure, Bolton trading blows, and Wrexham off the pace – it’s been a frantic night across the card.

Penalty drama at St Mary’s

Southampton 2-0 Swansea, and suddenly there’s a lifeline.

Zan Vipotnik hits the deck at the far post, clearly grappled by James Bree as the ball comes in. The referee points straight to the spot. Swansea, second best for long spells, finally have something to cling to.

Moments later, there’s another change of shape from the visitors. Ronald comes on, Joseph Opoku makes way, and the question hangs over the away end: have the Swans got anything left to turn this around?

Bolton and West Ham trade punches

Half-time at the Toughsheet Community Stadium and it’s Bolton 2-2 West Ham after a breathless opening 45.

Jarrod Bowen struck first, finally grabbing his first league goal from open play this season after relying on a penalty against Wolves last week. That seemed to settle West Ham, but Bolton hit back with purpose.

Ethan Erhahon dragged them level, and when Ruben Rodrigues buried a penalty to flip the scoreline, the place erupted. West Ham needed a response and got one, Konstantinos Mavropanos climbing to nod in from an Arne Engels free-kick to make it all square again.

Right on the whistle, Sam Dalby almost tilted it Bolton’s way, forcing Mads Hermansen into a smart save. The neutral will want another 45 just like that.

Phil Brown, watching on for BBC Radio Manchester, reserved special praise for Josh Sheehan, calling his display undroppable and hailing the manager’s bold changes. On this evidence, Bolton’s tweaks have rattled a Premier League side.

After the restart, Bowen looks in the mood again. The West Ham captain tries to twist clear in the box, gets crowded out, then quickly recycles the move, whipping in a cross from the right that just sails over the head of the bearded Pablo.

Cardiff chasing again

At Cardiff City Stadium, the pattern of the season refuses to budge.

Cardiff 0-1 Stoke at the break, and for the sixth time in eight league games the Bluebirds have conceded first. There has been intent – Ollie Tanner clipped the post with one effort – but their defending has again undermined the attacking promise.

Wing-back Ben Johnson punished that fragility, wriggling between two defenders to slot the only goal so far. As it stands, Stoke are on course for a third straight win. Cardiff stare at the prospect of a third consecutive defeat. The next 45 minutes already feels huge.

Wrexham flat, Burnley ruthless

At the Racecourse, Burnley hold a 1-0 lead over Wrexham and can be more than satisfied with their work so far.

Wrexham, not so much.

Josh Windass, who needed treatment just before the interval, does not reappear for the second half. He and Lewis O’Brien make way, with Oliver Rathbone and Callum O’Hare thrown on to jolt the hosts into life.

Former Wrexham midfielder Waynne Phillips doesn’t sugar-coat it on BBC Radio Wales. Burnley, he says, will be delighted with their advantage. Wrexham simply “haven’t been on it,” and he expects some sharp words in that dressing room. The reaction will tell plenty about where this Wrexham side really are.

Sheffield United hold firm, Championship night rolls on

At Ewood Park, Sheffield United lead Blackburn 2-1 and have already had to dig in after the restart.

Tyrese Campbell replaces Rhys Norrington-Davies at half-time, but it’s Blackburn who come out flying. Tom Atcheson lashes a low cross in from the right and only a scrambling intervention from Japhet Tanganga stops it turning into a tap-in. United bend, but they don’t quite break.

Across the Championship grounds, the second halves are back underway while Bolton and West Ham gulp down their half-time oranges. Five other fixtures are rolling again, tension rising with every minute.

Fans are already asking the same thing in every stand: is this the night their side finally kicks on, or another one that slips away?
