Premier League Transfer Window: Arsenal, City, Liverpool Moves

The transfer window has hit the dangerous part of the summer. The point where big clubs stop bluffing and start blinking.

Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham are all tangled in the same web of names – Julian Alvarez, Enzo Fernandez, Bruno Guimaraes, Ronald Araujo – and every move now threatens to knock three others off balance.

Arsenal pivot from Vinicius to Alvarez – and Guimaraes

Arsenal’s plan to prise Vinicius Jr from Real Madrid is over. The Brazilian has committed his future to the Bernabeu until 2032, and what had briefly looked like one of the wildest deals of the window has been shut down.

So Arsenal have turned. Fast.

Mikel Arteta has drawn up a new attacking shortlist: Julian Alvarez, Bradley Barcola and Iliman Ndiaye. Alvarez is the headline act. Reports suggest Arsenal have already agreed personal terms with the Manchester City forward as they prepare a renewed push, having previously missed out on Morgan Rogers as well.

There is a twist. Alvarez is said to prefer a move to Barcelona, yet he has not closed the door on a Premier League return. Arsenal’s interest is real, but they are not alone and they are not in control of the player’s first choice. Any move for Alvarez would also raise serious questions over Viktor Gyokeres and his long‑linked switch to north London.

Barcola is another live option, though Arsenal are chasing from behind. Liverpool have moved first for the PSG winger and talks are under way, while the French club’s £130m valuation is far beyond what Arsenal currently believe he is worth. Ndiaye remains on the list as a more attainable alternative.

While the attack is being reshaped on paper, the midfield is being rebuilt in reality. Newcastle have effectively confirmed Bruno Guimaraes’ move to Arsenal, with an official announcement now a formality.

After a saga that has dragged through the summer, the two clubs finally reached agreement on a fee understood to be around £75m, potentially rising to £80m. That figure would make Guimaraes the third major arrival at the Emirates after Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis.

Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson has already hinted that Arsenal had pushed hard for a lower fee before bowing to the Magpies’ demands. The deal is not yet announced, but the message from Tyneside is clear: Guimaraes is gone.

City brace for Rodri exit and launch Enzo Fernandez move

Manchester City, meanwhile, are staring at a problem they never expected to have: life without Rodri.

Barcelona have already seen a £38.6m bid rejected for the midfielder. City value him at closer to £68.5m and, at that price gap, do not even consider the offer serious enough to open proper talks. Barcelona are expected to return with a second proposal, but they will have to move a long way to tempt the Premier League champions.

City are planning as if the pressure will continue. Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Enzo Fernandez has emerged as a priority target, with Enzo Maresca keen on a reunion with his former vice-captain. City have already completed a deal for Elliot Anderson and are working on two further midfield signings, with Fernandez at the top of that list.

It will not be simple. Fernandez remains a hugely expensive target, and any deal would have to be threaded through the rest of City’s business. Ayyoub Bouaddi, who impressed at the World Cup with Morocco, is another name on their radar, with talks already under way.

The domino is obvious: if Rodri does force his way to Barcelona, City intend to have his replacement lined up before the ink dries.

Liverpool go bold for Araujo and battle for Barcola

Liverpool’s response to their defensive injury problems has been decisive. They have agreed a deal with Barcelona to sign Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan, according to widespread reports.

This is not just a stop-gap. The agreement is understood to include an option to buy next summer if the Uruguay international impresses at Anfield. Fabrizio Romano reports that a verbal agreement is already in place between the clubs and that Deco has approved the move.

For a player who wears the armband at Barcelona, a loan to Liverpool is a statement from both sides. From Barca, a financial and sporting calculation. From Liverpool, a recognition that their back line needs an elite presence immediately.

And they are not stopping there.

Liverpool are also pushing hard for Bradley Barcola. Talks with PSG have taken place, but there is a sizeable gap in valuation, with the French champions demanding a substantial fee for the winger. The 23‑year‑old remains a key target as Liverpool look to refresh their attack.

Arsenal’s interest in Barcola only sharpens the edges. The London club are monitoring the situation and could yet try to hijack the deal if they fail with Alvarez. For now, Liverpool are ahead in the race, but PSG’s stance means this one could run.

Tottenham spread the net for firepower

Across north London, Tottenham are casting their gaze across Europe for a new striker.

Georges Mikautadze of Villarreal has emerged as a serious option. The Georgia international only joined the Spanish club last summer in a deal worth around €30m, but his form has been strong enough to put him firmly on Spurs’ shortlist as they search for extra goals.

Cody Gakpo and Savinho are also under consideration as Ange Postecoglou looks to deepen his attacking options. Micky van de Ven, by contrast, is going nowhere – the defender has agreed a new contract, giving Spurs some welcome stability at the back while they rework the front of the team.

Tottenham are not yet locked onto a single target. They are probing, testing, waiting for the right opening.

United and Chelsea wrestle with gaps of their own

Manchester United’s need is more specific. They are desperate for a new left-back and have been for some time. Their pursuit of Lewis Hall is over, though, after Newcastle made it clear he is not for sale.

United have now turned to Jorge Salinas as they scramble for a solution on that flank. It is not the marquee name many supporters might have imagined at the start of the summer, but the need is immediate and the market is tight.

Chelsea, by contrast, are simultaneously buying and bracing.

They are set to confirm the arrival of Pep Chavarria, adding another piece to a squad that remains in constant motion. At the same time, they face the very real prospect of losing both Enzo Fernandez and Pedro Neto to Manchester City, who are circling with intent as they reshape their midfield and attack.

If City get their way, Chelsea could see a central pillar of their project walk out the door just as another arrives through it.

Esposito on the radar as Premier League giants plan ahead

Beyond the headline names, the scouting never stops.

Arsenal and Manchester United have both sent scouts to watch Inter Milan striker Pio Esposito during pre-season, according to reports. Inter publicly describe the 21‑year‑old as “untouchable”, yet privately are understood to have set an asking price of around £73m.

Esposito is thought to be very open to a move to the Premier League. That alone is enough to set up the prospect of a straight fight between Arsenal and United somewhere down the line.

For now, it is only interest and positioning. But this is how the next wave of transfer sagas begins.

The market is moving quickly, the numbers are rising, and the same names keep colliding. The question now is simple: which of Europe’s giants blinks first, and who walks away from this window transformed?
