Unai Emery's Rebuild at Villa Park: Key Departures and Defensive Targets

Unai Emery is staring at a brutal rebuild at Villa Park, and the clock is already ticking.

The heart of his defence has gone. Ezri Konsa, the calm presence who grew into a leader at Aston Villa, has reportedly agreed a four-year deal with an option for a further 12 months at Arsenal. For a side that had built its identity on a solid core while chasing the Champions League, it’s a seismic loss.

And Konsa is not the only one out of the door. Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne have all been moved on, stripping away experience and familiarity from a dressing room that only a few months ago looked settled and ambitious. Emery now has to piece together a new spine on the fly.

Villa turn to Tosin as the reshuffle bites

Amid the upheaval, Villa have zeroed in on Tosin as a priority to plug the Konsa-sized gap, according to Sky Sports. The 28-year-old centre-back, who arrived at Chelsea on a free from Fulham in 2024, has never truly found his footing at Stamford Bridge.

He came with pedigree as a Manchester City academy product and the reputation of a composed, modern defender. Instead, he has been shuffled through managerial changes and tactical tweaks without ever nailing down a permanent spot. The latest sign of his slide came with a shirt-number downgrade: pushed to No.38, his old No.4 handed to new signing Valentin Barco as Xabi Alonso stamps his mark on the squad.

Then came the clearest signal yet. Tosin was left out of Chelsea’s squad for their final pre-season friendly against Real Sociedad. For a player supposedly in his peak years, that omission spoke loudly.

Interest has not been in short supply. Marseille, Sevilla and Benfica – where Marco Silva, his former Fulham manager, is now in charge – have all been linked. Yet the chance to stay in the Premier League, step into a major role and join an ambitious Villa side could tilt the decision towards the Midlands.

Arsenal land Konsa in a statement move

While Villa scramble, Arsenal celebrate. Konsa’s capture is a major win for Mikel Arteta, who has been hunting defensive cover amid concerns over the fitness of William Saliba and Jurrien Timber.

Arteta has been clear about his intention to “improve and evolve the squad,” and Konsa fits that brief perfectly. At 28, he brings experience and versatility, capable of operating across multiple positions in the back four. For a side that thrives on tactical flexibility, that profile is gold dust.

Konsa leaves Villa Park after 286 appearances, a long and loyal stint that saw him grow from promising signing to cornerstone. The pull of the reigning Premier League champions, and the chance to compete at the very top, ultimately proved irresistible.

Tomori waits in the wings

Villa, though, are not putting all their hopes on Tosin. Behind the scenes, another name has moved into focus: Fikayo Tomori.

The AC Milan defender has emerged as a serious alternative, with reports suggesting he is keen on a return to England and open to a switch to Villa Park ahead of other interested clubs. Preliminary talks are already under way, giving Emery and the Villa hierarchy a second route to reinforce their backline.

Money will shape how bold they can be. Villa have already spent heavily this summer on Johan Manzambi, goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and Joao Gomes. Any move now has to be carefully judged.

That is where Tomori’s situation becomes intriguing. Milan are believed to want around €10–15m for the England international, a figure that could turn him into a smart, cost-effective solution if negotiations for Tosin drag or collapse.

Emery’s rebuild is under way, whether he’s ready or not. The question now is simple: who anchors his new defence when the season kicks off?
