Karim Coulibaly Joins Strasbourg After Rapid Rise at Bremen
Karim Coulibaly’s sharp ascent at Werder Bremen has reached its first major crossroads. The 20-year-old central defender has left the Bundesliga club to join French side Strasbourg, ending a two-year stint that transformed him from youth hopeful into top-flight regular.
Coulibaly arrived in Bremen from local rivals Hamburg in the summer of 2024, initially joining the U19s setup. He did not stay there long. By the 2025/26 campaign he had forced his way into the first team and stayed there, racking up 27 Bundesliga appearances and establishing himself as one of the most eye-catching young defenders in Germany.
For Werder, this is exactly the kind of story they wanted to tell – and exactly the kind of sale they knew would eventually come.
“Karim is a prime example of the path we have chosen: signing young, promising players and creating value with them,” said managing director of football Clemens Fritz. “He has made exemplary use of his opportunity with us and developed into a regular starter in the Bundesliga. Even though his departure is a difficult one for us from a sporting perspective, we are fulfilling our financial responsibility by making him such a lucrative offer.”
That tension is clear. On the pitch, Bremen lose a Germany youth international who had grown into a defensive pillar. Off it, they bank a deal that underlines their model and gives them room to move in the market.
Coulibaly, for his part, leaves with the tone of someone who knows he has ticked every box that was put in front of him.
“When I joined Werder two years ago, the management outlined a clear path for me, which has been fulfilled 100 percent,” he said. “Therefore, I would like to thank my teammates, my coaches, the entire staff, the club, my friends, my family, and of course the fans for their support and trust, for every wonderful moment, but also for every difficult situation from which I was able to learn. Werder Bremen will always remain a special part of my story and my life.”
From Hamburg’s academy to Bremen’s U19s and then into the Bundesliga spotlight, Coulibaly’s progression has been steep and relentless. Strasbourg now step in at the next stage of that journey, landing a defender who has already proved he can handle a leading role at senior level.
Werder must find the next Coulibaly. Strasbourg believe they have just signed him.
