Phil Foden Signs New Deal with Manchester City Until 2030

Phil Foden is used to people talking about his potential. Now he wants to talk about payback.

The Manchester City midfielder has signed a new four-year deal to stay at Etihad Stadium until 2030, a bold show of faith from the club at the very moment his form has stalled. No goal in his past 31 appearances for club and country, a sharp drop from the heights of 2023-24, when he scored 19 times, drove City to the Premier League title and swept the individual honours as both PFA Player of the Year and Premier League Player of the Season.

City’s response? Not doubt. A contract.

“It has made me feel relaxed and I can just concentrate on being the best version of me and give back to the football club for them trusting in me,” Foden said. “It is nice to see the support from the club and obviously it means a lot. It’s about time I try and repay them and give back to the club.”

Those words carry weight. This is not a youngster on the fringes trying to convince people he belongs. This is a homegrown star, 26 years old, already the face of a dynasty, acknowledging that the last two seasons have not matched his own standards.

He hit 10 goals last term, respectable by most measures, but nowhere near the electricity of that 2023-24 campaign. The numbers underline it. So does the body language. Opponents still double up. The talent is obvious. The end product has gone quiet.

City, though, have seen this story before – and they know the ending rarely stays flat for long with players of this quality.

Life after Pep, same home for Foden

Foden’s journey is woven into the Pep Guardiola era. Thrown into the first team at 17, nurtured and challenged, he became the poster boy for the academy pathway actually working at an elite club. Across 369 appearances, he has stacked up six Premier League titles, a Champions League and two FA Cups. That is a career’s worth of silverware before 30.

Now the architect of that era has gone.

Guardiola’s departure at the end of last season closed a monumental chapter for City and opened a delicate one for players who grew up under his gaze. Into that space steps Enzo Maresca, the Italian coach returning to Manchester after previous spells in the academy and as first-team assistant.

For some, that might feel like stepping into the unknown. For Foden, it feels more like a reunion.

“Very good – a fresh start, a new manager and up to now, really enjoying it,” he said of his summer under Maresca. “It is very strange but I know Enzo from before, so that also helps. I know him quite well and what [he] is about. That has definitely helped, to have that relationship with him.”

A “fresh start” is an intriguing phrase from a player so deeply embedded in City’s recent history. It hints at a reset, a chance to strip away the pressure of the goal drought and the constant comparisons with his own peak season. The relationship with Maresca could be crucial: familiarity, but with a new voice and a different tactical lens.

A new phase for City’s old prodigy

There is no sense of City easing Foden into the background. A long contract to 2030 is a statement that he remains central to the club’s future, not a nostalgic nod to what he once was.

For Foden, the challenge is clear. The medals, the awards, the 19-goal season – they are already on the shelf. What comes next will define whether he is remembered as the brightest talent of a golden era or the player who drove its second act.

He has the platform, the trust, and now a manager he knows. The question is no longer whether City believe in Phil Foden.

It is how quickly he can turn that faith into goals again.
