Gabriel Jesus Joins Barcelona for 10 Million Euros

Barcelona finally have Gabriel Jesus.

In a late twist to the window, the Arsenal forward has joined the Catalan club for a transfer fee of 10 million euros, a deal that materialised when it seemed Barça would close the market without the striker they had been chasing. Julián Álvarez was the priority, but Atlético de Madrid’s refusal to even sit at the table shut that door. Out of nowhere, Jesus became the solution.

For Barcelona, this is not a new love story. It is one that has been on pause for almost a decade.

A pursuit that started in Palmeiras

Back in 2016, when Gabriel Jesus was exploding at Palmeiras and breaking into the Brazil national team, Barcelona were already on the case. Robert Fernández, then sporting director, flew to Brazil to watch him live. The reports were glowing, the potential obvious, the interest very real.

But Europe had also noticed. Jesus was not choosing between Barcelona and anonymity. He was choosing between giants. And he was unsure.

Barcelona pushed their biggest card onto the table: Neymar.

Both were in the Brazil squad preparing for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. During that camp, Neymar — already a Barça star — went to work. He spoke to the young forward about the club, the lifestyle, the fit. He tried to pull him towards Camp Nou.

“Neymar told me about the city, that the climate was similar to Brazil, and it made me hesitate,” Gabriel Jesus recalled in an interview.

The conversation left a mark. He later admitted just how tough that decision became.

“It was a difficult moment when I had to choose a team. Neymar knows what it’s like to be young and have several European clubs want you. He told me about what Barcelona was like, about the city. And he told me the climate is similar to Brazil’s. He made me hesitate because Barça is also a great club, but I realized that I could go to another big club with more chances to play,” Jesus told The Sun.

Barcelona had the glamour. Another club had the promise of minutes.

Pep’s call that changed everything

That “other big club” was Manchester City. And the turning point was not a presentation, a brochure, or a PowerPoint. It was a phone call.

Pep Guardiola picked up the phone and spoke directly to Jesus. The message was clear enough to tilt the scales.

“I saw that City was really interested in me after speaking with Pep on the phone,” the striker said.

That call closed the door on Barcelona. Jesus went to Manchester, won titles, grew under Guardiola, then moved to Arsenal to become a key piece in Mikel Arteta’s rebuild.

Now the circle bends back towards Catalonia.

Years after Neymar’s pitch and Guardiola’s intervention, Barcelona have finally brought Gabriel Jesus to the club they once tried so hard to sell him on — this time for 10 million euros and with a very different role, a different dressing room, and a different stage of his career.

The question now is not why he chose City over Barça in 2016. It is what version of Gabriel Jesus Barcelona are getting in 2024, and how far that belated bet can take them.
