Mudryk's Return to Chelsea: Xabi Alonso Welcomes Great News

Xabi Alonso has his first real surprise of pre-season, and it’s arriving in Hong Kong.

Mykhailo Mudryk, out of competitive action since November 2024 and frozen out of Chelsea’s training ground during a protracted doping case, is rejoining the squad after the Football Association closed its proceedings and accepted the one year and eight months he has already served as his suspension.

For a player once billed as one of Europe’s most explosive wingers, it is a dramatic re-entry point.

From Isolation to Hong Kong

Mudryk’s absence has not been a quiet sabbatical. The 25-year-old was provisionally suspended after an “adverse finding” for the banned substance meldonium, cutting him off not only from matches but from the daily rhythm of elite football. No Cobham. No club staff. No dressing-room noise.

Instead, he pieced together his own version of a professional environment: a private coach, hired goalkeepers, and sessions at non-league Uxbridge. It kept him fit, but not truly involved. Not part of anything.

Alonso, speaking after Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to 10-man Tottenham in a friendly in Sydney, made it clear that this return is more human than tactical.

“Yes, he is coming to Hong Kong, but I haven't spoken to him yet,” he said. The words were simple, the subtext heavy.

A Player Back, But Not Yet Ready

Alonso did not dress it up. Mudryk is back in the building, but not yet back in the team.

“It’s too early to tell how he is in terms of fitness, in terms of the game time you need to be involved again, so it’s still too early to tell,” he admitted.

Chelsea’s head coach knows what the numbers don’t show. This is not a standard pre-season integration; it is a reintroduction after enforced exile.

“We are happy for him, especially for him, because we are probably not able to understand what he has been through during this time and how he feels at the moment with the things he has had to cope with.”

Mudryk has effectively been training in a parallel world, chasing a level he could not test in matches, without the feedback loop of teammates, coaches, or competition.

“We expect that it will take time,” Alonso said. “He trained on his own every day, and I think it had to be really, really hard because he wanted to play football, he wanted to be part of a team, and he was not allowed to do that for such a long time.

“Afterwards we will see if it’s quicker or slower, but we need to be aware of that. We want him to feel part of the team. Once he is with us, we will see how things develop.”

The message is clear: patience, not pressure.

A Surprise Addition to a Crowded Department

What makes Mudryk’s return even more intriguing is the squad he is walking back into. Chelsea have not stood still in his absence; they have stocked the flanks.

“Yeah, to be honest, we were not expecting to have this great news at this moment,” he said.

Chelsea built as if Mudryk might not return in time to matter. Now he is suddenly back on the board, a wild card with pace, rawness and something to prove, but with no guarantees.

The competition for places will be ruthless. The Ukraine international will have to fight his way past players who have been living the rhythm he has been denied: travelling, playing, making mistakes, correcting them, and going again.

The Unknown Ahead

For now, the story is less about tactics and more about reintegration. How quickly can a player who has lived on the margins of the sport for nearly two years adjust to the intensity, the expectations, the scrutiny?

Alonso’s stance is pragmatic. Mudryk will travel. He will train. He will be treated as a member of the group again. The rest will depend on how his body and his game respond after so long in the shadows.
