For all that Lammens nailed down the No.1 shirt last season, the goalkeeping department has barely stood still.

Andre Onana has gone back out on loan to Trabzonspor. Altay Bayindir and Radek Vitek are being mentioned around the exit door as United streamline the depth chart. Yet, even with Darlow signed and Margetson added, United’s recruitment team have still been casting an eye across the market.

That is where Orlando Gill comes in.

The San Lorenzo goalkeeper, who impressed for Paraguay at this summer’s World Cup, has drawn interest from across Europe. His agent, Mario Jara, has now confirmed that United were among the clubs to make an approach.

“We are in talks with English clubs as well as clubs in Germany,” Jara told DSports Radio, revealing that “there were enquiries with Manchester United” and that only two “concrete offers” are currently on the table. Negotiations, he said, are ongoing and “the sale is close,” with the player ready for a “step up in quality.”

The message from the agent is clear: Gill is on the move, San Lorenzo expect to cash in, and the deal needs to be handled with care. United, though, appear unlikely to go further down that road after bringing in Darlow, unless the dominoes fall unexpectedly in the final weeks.

Even so, the mere fact United checked in on Gill underlines a key theme of this window at Old Trafford: nothing in the goalkeeping pecking order is being left to drift.

While the goalkeeping picture simmers, the more eye-catching storyline sits higher up the pitch.

United have been linked with a move for Francisco Conceicao, and the situation at Juventus is starting to open a door. The Italian club’s pursuit and recruitment of Bayer Leverkusen prospect Kerim Alajbegovic has forced them into difficult financial choices, and Conceicao is suddenly at the centre of them.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, both Manchester United and Liverpool have lodged enquiries for the 23-year-old winger. Juventus, needing to balance the books, are said to be willing to sell, with an asking price in the region of £34m to £42m.

This is not a fringe player being quietly pushed out. Conceicao made 42 appearances for Juventus last season, a regular presence in a side that expects to challenge on multiple fronts every year. Letting him go would be a hard, pragmatic call from Turin, driven by the cost of reshaping their own squad.

From United’s perspective, the profile fits. Young, experienced at a high level, and capable of operating in the wide attacking roles Carrick wants to keep sharp and competitive. A Premier League move is considered likely for the Portuguese forward, and if Juventus commit to the sale, the battle for his signature could turn into one of the defining subplots of the window’s final month.

Carrick already has his core rebuild under way. The question now is whether United choose to turn a smart summer into a statement one.
