Manchester United's Hope as Mourinho Signals Camavinga's Exit

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has been handed a significant jolt of encouragement – and it has come straight from Jose Mourinho’s office at Valdebebas.

Eduardo Camavinga, long admired at Old Trafford, has been told in direct talks with the new Real Madrid boss that he does not sit at the heart of plans for next season. For a player of his pedigree, that message lands hard. For United, it opens a door they have been knocking on for months.

Mourinho’s verdict changes the landscape

The story has been building since May 15, when TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey revealed that United had set their sights on Camavinga and that Real Madrid were open to a sale. The Frenchman, twice a LaLiga champion and twice a Champions League winner with Madrid, had already endured a bruising blow when he was left out of France’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

United moved early, speaking to the player’s representatives and sounding out the possibility of a deal. At that stage, the sense was clear: Madrid would listen. The midfielder’s camp knew there was serious Premier League interest.

United have not stood still since. Andrey Santos has arrived from Chelsea. Youri Tielemans has come in from Aston Villa. Yet INEOS, reshaping the club’s spine, want a third midfield signing before the window shuts. Camavinga has remained on that shortlist throughout.

Last week, Fabrizio Romano reported that United had held “conversations” with the Frenchman’s agents, but that the player’s preference was to stay in Madrid. The hinge point, Romano said, would be a face‑to‑face with Mourinho.

That conversation has now happened – and it has shifted the mood.

“Very tough time getting minutes”

Spanish journalist Sergio Valentin, who has a sizeable following on X, reported on Friday night that Mourinho has laid out Camavinga’s reality in stark terms.

“Jose Mourinho has spoken with Eduardo Camavinga and explained his situation to him,” Valentin wrote. “He’s going to have a very tough time getting minutes. Mourinho has been direct with him. Mourinho already had this idea before arriving at Valdebebas. The club is looking for options for him to be transferred, although Camavinga, for the moment, has said he doesn’t want to leave.”

That is the crux. The coach is clear. The club is now actively exploring a sale. The player is still resisting.

But at Real Madrid, when the hierarchy decide a player is available, history shows there is usually only one outcome. However reluctant Camavinga might be, the pressure will build if he sees his role shrink and his prospects dim.

United’s moment to move

From United’s perspective, this is as strong an invitation as they are likely to get.

They already know Madrid are prepared to cash in. They know Mourinho does not see Camavinga as central to his first season in charge. They know the club are “looking for options” for a transfer. The next logical step is obvious: formal contact with Madrid, not just conversations with agents.

Complicating matters is Madrid’s own midfield reshuffle. With plans in place to sign Rodri, the competition for minutes in the Bernabeu engine room will only intensify. Camavinga, who has battled injury issues over the past two seasons, risks sliding further down the pecking order as a younger, fitter, or more trusted option arrives.

That is where United can strike. A club of their stature can offer a prominent role, a central place in a new project, and the kind of stage a 21-year-old with Camavinga’s talent should command. They can also point to the reality in Madrid: stay, and he could be reduced to a peripheral figure in a squad being reshaped around him.

The player’s stance today is firm – he does not want to leave the Bernabeu. The question is how long that resolve holds if Mourinho’s words turn into team sheets and he finds himself watching from the bench.
