Manchester United Divided Over €60m Move for Manu Kone

Manchester United’s summer rebuild has hit its first major fault line – and it runs straight through the recruitment department at Old Trafford.

The club’s hierarchy are divided over a move for AS Roma midfielder Manu Kone, with the France international emerging as a serious but contentious option as Michael Carrick pushes for a third midfield signing before the new Premier League season.

United have already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, reshaping the core of Carrick’s team. The manager still wants one more midfielder to complete the puzzle. The debate now is whether Kone is worth the sizeable gamble.

Kone deal stalls amid internal doubts

Reports in Italy this week claimed United have agreed personal terms with Kone, who was part of France’s World Cup squad that fell to Spain in the semi-final earlier this month. On the player’s side, the path looks clear.

The problem is Roma – and United’s own recruitment team.

Roma are said to be demanding a €60 million (£51m) package for the 25-year-old. That fee has sharpened minds in Manchester and exposed fault lines behind the scenes. According to The Telegraph, the proposed deal does not have “universal backing” among United’s hierarchy, with some figures unconvinced that Kone represents the right profile or value at that price.

So United sit in a familiar position: terms with the player broadly in place, no agreement with the selling club, and no internal consensus on whether to push harder or walk away.

Alternative targets, familiar complications

Kone is not the only name on the table. Bournemouth pair Alex Scott and Tyler Adams remain on United’s shortlist, offering very different routes to bolstering Carrick’s options – one a rising creative talent, the other a proven, combative presence.

A move for Aurelien Tchouameni is also being monitored, but that depends entirely on Real Madrid’s stance. Only if the European giants show a willingness to sell will United attempt to test their resolve.

Even beyond Kone, there is hesitation. The Telegraph also reports reservations at United over Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. United tried to sign the 22-year-old last summer, only to be met with a £100m valuation from Brighton. Baleba then endured an inconsistent season under Fabian Hurzeler, cooling some of the enthusiasm that once surrounded him.

The pattern is clear: options exist, but each comes with a significant caveat – price, performance, or internal disagreement.

Carrick content with pre-season progress – for now

While the recruitment team wrestle with numbers and names, Carrick’s squad continues its pre-season work on the pitch. On Friday, United thrashed Rosenborg 5-0 in Norway, a performance that underlined the growing sharpness of the group already in place.

“I think we’re in a good place. I think there’s four weeks to go to the start and we’re gradually getting some boys back from the World Cup as we progress,” Carrick said after the win.

He stressed the need for “a little bit of patience and time” and spoke of keeping players fit while “moving forward” as the key to United’s direction. “As it stands right now, I think we’re in a pretty good place. So, the boys will get better as we go.”

Carrick sounds relaxed. The recruitment department cannot afford to be.

Four weeks is a long time in a transfer window and no time at all when major decisions are still on the table. United want one more midfielder. The question now is whether they are prepared to stake €60m and a divided dressing-room corridor of power on Manu Kone – or whether a club desperate for clarity chooses a different path.
