Helmer's Fiery Clash with Uli Hoeneß: A Dressing-Room Story

Uli Hoeneß stepped onto the Sport Bild gala stage on Monday night to receive the Legend Award. Out in front, on the red carpet, one of his former players was busy telling a story that showed just how combustible life with that legend could be.

Thomas Helmer, ex-Bayern defender and long-time TV pundit, casually dropped a line that turned heads.

“I wanted to beat up Uli Hoeneß,” he admitted.

The rant didn’t stop there. As Helmer walked past, Hoeneß zeroed in on him and shouted: “And you’re running around like my grandfather!”

That was the trigger.

Electrolytes, a Wall, and a Quick Escape

Helmer wasn’t prepared to swallow that insult.

He grabbed the nearest thing to hand.

“I took a cup of electrolytes and wanted to throw it at his head,” he said. The aim, fortunately for Hoeneß, was off. “But I did not hit him, I hit the wall.”

Hoeneß read the situation quickly. The Bayern boss retreated, not to the boardroom, but to the treatment room.

“Then he was smart enough to go to the physios in the dressing room and hide,” Helmer said with a smile.

The story could have ended with fines, suspensions, or a long-running feud. It didn’t.

By the next day, the steam had gone.

“The next day we then had a completely open conversation. Uli never held a grudge,” Helmer explained.

The man who once drove him to hurl a cup across the dressing room is now one of the first people Helmer would call in a crisis.

“There are two people in the world I would go to if I had a problem. No matter whether private, financial or health-related – one of them is Uli Hoeneß!” he said.
