Manchester United Plans Future for JJ Gabriel and Harry Amass After U21 Victory

Manchester United’s academy conveyor belt rolled again on Monday night – and Michael Carrick knows he has decisions to make.

A ruthless 5-0 dismantling of Ipswich Town in Premier League 2 at Leigh Sports Village showcased two of the club’s most exciting youngsters, with 15-year-old JJ Gabriel and 19-year-old Harry Amass at the heart of it. The performance was sparkling. The futures of both players, though, are at very different crossroads.

Amass impresses – but loan exit looms

Carrick has been struck by Amass’ progress over the summer. The left-back has operated as understudy to Luke Shaw in pre-season and arrives off the back of a strong loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday last season, even if a mid-season move to Norwich City and subsequent injury cut that campaign short.

Despite United failing to bring in a senior left-back during this window, Carrick admitted Amass could still be on the move before Tuesday’s deadline – and not permanently.

A loan is now viewed as the most likely route, with the club open to sending him out again to accelerate his development rather than cashing in.

“It comes to this stage [of the window], and there's always a little bit where, and this is not just Harry by the way, this is just the stage of the window and putting squads together and dynamics of changes, and younger players and loans and not loans, and all sorts of different scenarios,” Carrick said.

“I think we always try to do the best for each individual player, as well as keeping the group strong. I've been really pleased with Harry. I think he had a really good season that didn't finish so good with the injury, but it's been great to have him around pre-season. He's done really well. So, let's see what happens. But he played really well the other night.”

Those last few words matter. Amass didn’t just make up the numbers against Ipswich – he underlined why the club rate him so highly. Yet the reality of squad building, and the need for regular minutes, means United are ready to test him again away from Old Trafford.

JJ Gabriel lights it up at 15

While Amass edges towards another loan, JJ Gabriel is only just beginning to announce himself.

On his competitive debut for the U21s, the 15-year-old delivered the kind of performance that turns heads inside a club. A stunning goal. Two assists. Constant threat. On a night when United dominated, Gabriel’s contribution still cut through.

Carrick, watching on from the stands at Leigh Sports Village, made a point of highlighting the collective display first – but Gabriel’s name quickly followed.

“I thought the boys played ever so well, actually,” he said. “Really good team, really strong team that we had, and you could see that the quality. I really enjoyed the game.

“Really pleased with the boys, the way they went about it. The quality, the attitude, everything about the game was really good. So, really encouraged by that.

“JJ is one of the boys. He's obviously got a really big talent. He's trained with us quite a bit. He's getting experience all the time. He's physically adapting to each step that he makes, and just continuing his development.”

No grand declarations. No rush. But the pattern is clear: United have already moved Gabriel closer to the first-team environment in training, and his leap to U21 level at such a young age is being carefully managed.

He is still physically growing into the demands of each level he reaches, yet his technical quality and decision-making are giving the club every reason to keep nudging him forward.

Two talents, one familiar dilemma

For United, this is the modern academy balancing act in sharp focus.

Amass, on the verge of senior football, may need to leave again to come back stronger. Gabriel, still in his mid-teens, is being eased into tougher surroundings without the weight of expectation crushing him.

The 5-0 scoreline against Ipswich will be forgotten soon enough. The choices United make on Amass and Gabriel over the coming days and months will not.
