Michael Carrick wants more than just a reset. He wants a statement at Old Trafford.

On the eve of Sunday’s first home game of the season, the United manager made it clear the mood has to change quickly after last week’s setback.

“We want a good performance and a win, obviously,” Carrick said, laying out the demands as plainly as possible. “The first home game of the season is one we really look forward to, and with the supporters coming, we're massively looking forward to the game.

“We had a setback last week and we want to get back to playing well and winning football matches. It's another tough game again. They obviously had a big result last week as well, so it'll be another challenge for us. But, yeah, massively looking forward to it.”

The message is simple: response required.

Injuries bite into early plans

Carrick’s build-up has not been smooth. United’s £70 million summer signing Carlos Baleba has been ruled out for up to three weeks with an ankle problem suffered shortly after his arrival from Brighton. It is an early jolt for a player signed to reshape the midfield and a frustration for a manager trying to bed in his new core.

Amad Diallo is also sidelined, trimming Carrick’s attacking options just as he looks to inject more edge and fluency into United’s forward play.

The injuries have forced tweaks and contingency plans, but not a change in tone. Carrick still expects his side to play on the front foot and give Old Trafford something to get behind.

Carrick drew clear encouragement from a ruthless 5-0 win over Ipswich at Leigh, a performance that showcased both depth and promise inside the club. The standout moment belonged to 15-year-old JJ Gabriel, whose sublime goal underlined why he is already being talked about as a serious prospect.

“I thought the boys played ever so well, actually,” Carrick said of the under-21s. “A really good team, really strong team that we had, and you could see the quality. I really enjoyed the game.

“I'm really pleased with the boys, the way they went about it, the quality, the attitude. Everything about the game was really good, so really encouraged by that.

“JJ's one of the boys. He's obviously got a really big talent. He's trained with us quite a bit, he's getting experience all the time, he's physically adapting to each step that he makes, and we'll continue his development.”
