Federico Valverde: Mourinho's Midfield Solution for Real Madrid

Federico Valverde has been many things for Real Madrid. Full-back in an injury crisis, winger in a tactical tweak, attacking midfielder when the game demanded legs and chaos. One thing he has rarely been is just a midfielder.

That is about to change.

Mourinho draws a line

Jose Mourinho has walked into Valdebebas with a clear idea: Federico Valverde is a midfielder, and a midfielder only. Not a utility man, not a plug-the-gap option. A deep-lying presence at the heart of his Real Madrid.

According to MARCA, the new Madrid coach wants to end the Uruguayan’s years of being shuffled around the pitch. For Mourinho, Valverde belongs in central midfield, operating from deeper zones, dictating and destroying in equal measure.

So far, the plan is working.

Valverde has started both of Madrid’s games this season in a double pivot alongside Bernardo Silva. He has not just survived the responsibility; he has thrived in it.

Numbers that back the eye test

Against Real Sociedad, Valverde turned in the kind of performance Mourinho builds teams around.

• Two duels won.
• A 93% pass completion rate that underlined his control in possession.

And this was not a purely destructive display. He assisted Kylian Mbappé and still found time to unleash two shots on goal. Steel and incision in the same performance. The sort of all-court midfield showing that makes a coach double down on his conviction.

For now, Mourinho has every reason to keep Valverde anchored in that role. He finally has specialist options at full-back and on the right wing. The days of the Uruguayan being dragged out wide or dropped into the back line out of necessity should be over.

Central midfield is where Mourinho believes Valverde’s ceiling sits. The early evidence is on his side.

The Tchouameni question

There is, however, a complication coming down the track. His name is Aurelien Tchouameni.

The Frenchman has long been viewed as Real Madrid’s natural pivot, the reference point in front of the defence. Under previous coaches, he was the default choice for that role and was widely expected to be Mourinho’s preferred partner for Bernardo Silva in the double pivot.

An injury has delayed that decision. It has also opened the door for Valverde.

With Tchouameni sidelined, Valverde has stepped into the vacancy and used it to cement Mourinho’s trust. Clear role, consistent minutes, strong performances – for once, his season has started without turbulence or tactical reshuffles.

But Tchouameni will not be out forever.

When he returns, Mourinho will face his first major structural call in midfield. Does he restore the Frenchman as the primary pivot and adjust Valverde’s role again? Does he keep faith with the Uruguayan’s form and rethink Tchouameni’s place? Or does he try to fit both into a system that can only truly accommodate one natural anchor?

For Valverde, the stakes are obvious. After years of being the solution everywhere, he has finally been given a defined home in the middle of the pitch. The challenge now is to make that position his so emphatically that even Tchouameni’s comeback cannot move him.
