Liverpool Target Ronald Araujo Amid Defensive Crisis

Liverpool have turned to Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo in a bid to plug growing gaps in Andoni Iraola’s back line, opening talks over a season-long loan for the Uruguay international.

The approach, first revealed by Fabrizio Romano, underlines how quickly Iraola’s defensive plans have been shredded before a ball has been kicked. Araujo, 27, is a full Uruguay international, comfortable at both center-back and right-back, and made 24 La Liga appearances last season. He is not a prospect. He is a ready-made solution.

Iraola’s plans hit by early setbacks

Joe Gomez’s injury was the first jolt. The defender limped out of pre-season and subsequent scans confirmed he will miss around a month, ruling him out of the start of the campaign.

Giovanni Leoni is still edging his way back from a serious ACL problem. Conor Bradley, who had been pencilled in as a major part of Liverpool’s right flank, remains some distance from returning to full fitness.

Layer that on top of Ibrahima Konate’s departure to Real Madrid on a free transfer, and the picture becomes stark. Liverpool’s defensive core has been stripped of experience and continuity in a single summer.

Iraola has not hidden his concern. He has repeatedly flagged the need for reinforcements, particularly in the back line, where he feels the squad is running on fumes.

Asked earlier in the summer about the possibility of signing a right-back, he laid out the dilemma with unusual clarity.

“It depends on Conor Bradley's situation,” he said. “If you have a fully fit, healthy Conor Bradley, we are very happy, ready to go and we would not be asking ourselves these questions.

“I think it’s a situation that is tricky, because we trust Conor in the long term, we know we want him to be our right-back but right now he is still, I would say, a little bit far from returning.

“So, with the center-back, with the right-back situation, in terms of defensive depth, we are, I think, very thin right now so I think it’s a solution that we are trying to find, yes.”

The move for Araujo is that solution brought to life.

Araujo: experience and versatility

Araujo offers something Liverpool are suddenly short of: reliability at the highest level. He has been hardened by years at Barcelona and by the demands of international football with Uruguay, and he brings the kind of positional versatility Iraola badly needs.

At center-back, he would compete to anchor the defence. At right-back, he would give Iraola cover while Bradley recovers and allow Liverpool to avoid rushing the youngster back before he is ready.

For a coach who wants his back four to defend aggressively and cover big spaces, Araujo’s physicality and recovery speed fit the brief. He is also an organiser, a presence who can steady a reshaped unit that has lost Konate’s authority and Gomez’s availability at a crucial time.

Youth signings not enough

Liverpool have not been idle this summer, but their business so far has been geared towards the future rather than the immediate strain of a long season.

The club moved for 20-year-old defender Jeremy Jacquet and young forward Victor Munoz. Jacquet arrives with a strong reputation, yet he has not played a single minute for the club as he continues to be carefully managed after his own injury issues.

Promising, yes. Ready to carry a defence through the early months of a demanding campaign? Not yet.

That gap between potential and readiness is exactly where Araujo comes in. A loan deal would give Iraola a proven defender for the here and now, without blocking the pathway for Jacquet or Bradley once they are fully fit and integrated.

Iraola steps into the home dugout at Anfield for the first time this weekend, when Liverpool face AS Monaco in a pre-season fixture that will feel anything but gentle for a coach still piecing together his back line.

By then, Liverpool will hope talks for Araujo have advanced. The urgency is clear, the need obvious.

The question now is whether Barcelona will open the door and allow one of their senior defenders to walk through it, straight into the heart of Iraola’s new project on Merseyside.
