Liverpool's Midfield Dilemma: The Case for Lamine Camara

Liverpool can see the problem. Solving it is another matter entirely.

Sunday at St James’ Park stripped everything bare. In that frantic draw with Newcastle United, Liverpool’s midfield didn’t just creak – it split wide open. Runners poured through the centre, counter-attacks sliced straight at the back line and, for long spells, there was no one standing in the middle to stem the tide.

This isn’t a new concern. It just became impossible to ignore.

A glaring gap in the middle

Liverpool need a midfielder who lives in that central pocket. Someone who screens, breaks up play, then has the quality to turn defence into attack. Right now, none of their options naturally operate as that anchor. They have energy, creativity, pressing. What they don’t have is a genuine midfield stopper who can also build.

And this is where the frustration kicks in.

Finding that kind of player in the final days of a transfer window is a nightmare. Clubs dig in. Even big offers get brushed aside because there’s no time to replace a key man. Everyone knows the market is skewed and desperate.

Yet, against that backdrop, one name stands out like a flashing sign: Lamine Camara.

Camara ticks every box

Camara is 22, already proven over multiple seasons and about as reliable as you can hope for in such a specialist role. He doesn’t just help out defensively; he shoulders a huge chunk of that workload. At the same time, he creates chances at a level most deep-lying midfielders can’t touch.

Across the top five European leagues, Camara is unique. For the 25/26 season, he is the only midfielder who sits in the top 10 per cent both for share of defensive workload and for creating big chances. That blend of grit and guile simply doesn’t exist elsewhere in the same package.

And this isn’t a one-off spike.

The 24/25 numbers tell almost the same story. Again, he was the only player to rank in the top 10 per cent for both metrics. Two seasons, same output, same balance of steel and creativity. That’s not a hot streak. That’s a profile.

Put bluntly: Camara looks as close to a sure thing as you get in the transfer market. He does everything to at least an above-average level for a top-five-league midfielder, and he is genuinely elite in the exact areas Liverpool are crying out to improve.

Chelsea move, Liverpool hesitate

Here’s the twist. He’s available.

Reports from Foot Mercato and others say Chelsea are pushing ahead with a deal for Camara. Liverpool, crucially, have been offered the chance to step in.

This is the sort of situation that usually never arises this late in a window: a tailor-made solution, 22 years old, with a two-year body of elite data in precisely the role you need. Yet Liverpool look set to walk past it.

The indication is that they will move on to other targets, leaving Camara to head for Stamford Bridge while they chase an alternative. Any alternative, by definition, will be harder to prise away and almost certainly a poorer fit for the specific hole in their squad.

Liverpool know the problem. The numbers have handed them the answer. If they let Chelsea take Camara now, they may spend the rest of the season watching that same midfield gap being exploited and wondering why they turned down the one deal that made perfect footballing sense.
