James Ward-Prowse Returns to Southampton: Cut-Price Deal Completed

Southampton have brought James Ward-Prowse back to St Mary’s, re-signing their former captain from Championship rivals West Ham United in a deal worth just under £1m.

The 31-year-old midfielder has agreed a two-year contract, completing an emotional return to the club where he grew from academy hopeful to standard-bearer.

“It feels a bit surreal,” Ward-Prowse admitted. “The last couple of days have been pretty intense, but I'm delighted to be back, and to be wearing the red and white again is truly special.”

A Southampton story that never really ended

Ward-Prowse first walked through the doors at Southampton as an eight-year-old. He rose through the ranks, broke into the first team and went on to make 410 senior appearances, becoming one of the club’s defining figures of the modern era.

He left in 2023 for West Ham, seeking a new challenge after years of carrying responsibility on the south coast. In claret and blue he featured 75 times, while also taking in loan spells at Nottingham Forest and, most recently, Burnley, where he played 14 games last season.

But the pull of home never quite faded.

“It's the place I call home, obviously having come through the academy since I was eight,” he said. “It was an incredible journey up until the point that I left, but home is a special place and I always had it in the back of my mind that it was somewhere that I wanted to be.

“I'm here today very excited and looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

A set-piece specialist returns

Ward-Prowse’s numbers at Southampton underline his influence. He scored 55 goals and supplied 52 assists during his first spell with the club, dictating games from midfield and tormenting goalkeepers from dead balls.

Seventeen of those goals came from Premier League free-kicks, leaving him just one behind David Beckham’s all-time top-flight record of 18. That pursuit will now continue back in familiar surroundings.

On the international stage, Ward-Prowse has earned 11 caps for England, scoring twice, his consistency at club level regularly pushing him into the national conversation.

Now, with a cut-price deal done and the red and white shirt back on his shoulders, Southampton have their on-field leader home again — and one of the Championship’s most lethal technicians back over the ball.
