Julian Alvarez: Arsenal's Growing Interest Amid Atletico's Stance

Arsenal’s move for Julian Alvarez has shifted from background noise to a very real possibility, with Fabrizio Romano warning that the Emirates option “should not be underestimated” as the transfer window ticks into its final days.

The Argentina forward has spent the summer pushing hard for Barcelona, a stance that has badly strained his relationship with Atletico Madrid and their supporters. He has been clear: he wants Barca, he dreams of Barca, and until “today, tonight, the recent hours,” Romano says, that has been his only message.

But Atletico have drawn a brutal red line.

Atletico’s hardline: ‘We will not negotiate with Barcelona’

On Thursday, Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin went public with a furious statement that effectively shut the Camp Nou door in Alvarez’s face for as long as he remains in charge.

“The truth is that it outrages us even more; we are repulsed by the dishonesty, the lack of ethics, transparency and professionalism, and we can only insist that we will not negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances,” Gil Marin said.

“I have the support of everyone working with me, from shareholders to directors, and the only certain and firm decision is that we will not negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances. You have my word – the player [Alvarez] will most certainly not be transferred to Barcelona.”

He doubled down after the Champions League draw, stressing that as long as he is Atletico CEO, Barcelona can “forget about Julian Alvarez.” Not just this window. For the future as well.

The message is unmistakable: Barca are out.

Arsenal wait – and work – in the shadows

That stance leaves Alvarez with precious few options. This is where Arsenal come in.

Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, insists the London club are not just passively watching events unfold.

“I know I’ve been on this one for a few days and many of you don’t believe it but I keep telling you that Arsenal are there for Julian Alvarez. Arsenal are there. Arsenal are waiting. Arsenal have their own strategy, I think it’s a real strategy,” he said.

“It’s not that Arsenal are just there looking at the situation. Arsenal are in the background because obviously Arsenal need to respect the player, his family, his agents, the player decides. So Arsenal can only wait but at the same time, while they are waiting and while they are in the background, Arsenal are active in the conversations.”

According to Romano, Arsenal have already told Atletico Madrid they are ready to “make business” and try to reach an agreement if Alvarez gives the green light. The financial side looks feasible after the sale of Gabriel Martinelli, with the Brazilian expected to bring in between £50m and £60m.

“This extra money after all the extra money generated by Arsenal in the recent months gives Arsenal space to make business for Julian Alvarez,” Romano explained. “So Arsenal will be ready to sit at the table with Atletico Madrid and to reach an agreement.”

The structure is there. The money is there. The will is there. What’s missing is the player’s decision.

Atletico open the door – but only away from Barca

Gil Marin’s public stance on Barcelona was fierce, but his words on other clubs were very different.

According to Romano, the Atletico chief made it clear that if Alvarez “doesn’t want to stay in Madrid, no to Barcelona, but we are open to finding a solution.”

“Guys, the message from Atletico Madrid is very clear: if Julian wants to go to Arsenal please go. You are free to go,” Romano said.

“They would love to keep Julian, obviously, Atletico Madrid would love to continue with Julian to have a new chance to continue together. But if Julian wants to go and if Julian will ask to go they know that Arsenal are there. So, it’s on Julian to decide what he wants to do.”

The pressure finally lands squarely on Alvarez. His preferred destination is blocked by a furious CEO. His current club are willing to sell – just not to the one team he has been pushing for all summer. And Arsenal, patient but prepared, are standing by the phone.

Four or five days that could change everything

With “four or five days to go,” as Romano put it, the situation can flip in an instant.

“It’s real people in real life,” he said. “So if at any moment Julian Alvarez or his agent call Arsenal to tell them ‘okay we want to come because there is no other way’ Arsenal will be ready. So get ready for this scenario because it’s not impossible. Arsenal are there for Julian and we have to follow the situation but this depends on the player.”

Romano keeps circling back to the same warning: “this Arsenal scenario should not be underestimated.”

Alvarez has held out for Barcelona all summer. Now the clock is running, the door is shut, and a Champions League-chasing Arsenal side are quietly offering him a different path.
