Gallagher Secures Draw for Spurs in Behind-Closed-Doors Friendly

Tottenham’s preseason rhythm stayed intact on Saturday, even if the winning streak did not. In a closed-door, shortened friendly at their training ground, Conor Gallagher struck to secure a 1-1 draw against Getafe and keep Roberto De Zerbi’s side unbeaten this summer.

This was no ordinary warm-up. Just 35 minutes each half, no crowd, and a LaLiga side that finished seventh last season treating it like serious work. It suited De Zerbi just fine.

New faces, new roles

The Italian handed starts to summer arrivals Sandro Tonali, Jan Paul van Hecke and Andy Robertson, while Archie Gray took the armband – a clear signal of the manager’s faith in the youngster’s authority on the pitch.

Tottenham tried to impose themselves early. Robertson, already looking in tune with set-piece duties, delivered the best chance of the opening period. His free-kick found Ben Davies, whose header at the end of the first half skimmed close but not close enough. It was the nearest Spurs came to breaking the deadlock before the interval.

Getafe strike first

After the restart, Tottenham pushed again. Mikey Moore stretched for a chance that just wouldn’t sit for him, then Richarlison rose from a set-piece and forced David Soria into action with a header that almost sneaked past the Getafe goalkeeper.

Just as Spurs appeared to be tightening their grip, Getafe landed the first blow. Alberto Risco combined neatly with a one-two on the edge of the area before finishing past Antonín Kinsky in the 55th minute, a sharp reminder that any lapse would be punished.

The goal jolted Tottenham. The tempo lifted, the passes snapped a little quicker, and the response arrived almost immediately.

Gallagher answers back

Five minutes after falling behind, Spurs were level. In the 60th minute, the ball was worked into Richarlison, who held his ground and helped keep the move alive. Gallagher arrived to sweep home the equaliser, a clean, decisive finish that underlined his knack for timing his runs into dangerous areas.

From there, Tottenham hunted a winner. Richarlison, a constant aerial threat, saw another header clawed away by Soria in the final moments of this condensed 70-minute contest. Getafe, organised and stubborn, held on to take a draw back to Spain.

For De Zerbi, the streak of four straight preseason wins is over, but the unbeaten record remains. More importantly, his new signings have minutes, his young captain has responsibility, and his forwards are finding chances. The real question now is how this controlled summer edge will translate when the Premier League intensity finally arrives.
