FIFA Opens Disciplinary Case After World Cup Final Brawl

The World Cup final between Spain and Argentina was supposed to end with medals, tears and history. Instead, it also delivered a brawl that now sits on the desk of FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee.

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against several Argentina players and a member of their coaching staff, as well as one Spain international, after ugly scenes followed Spain’s 1-0 win in the July 19 showpiece.

Paredes at the center of the storm

Leandro Paredes finds himself at the heart of the case. The Argentina midfielder has been charged with three counts of assault after sparking the melee at the final whistle.

According to the report submitted to FIFA, Paredes violently struck Spain defender Eric Garcia in the throat with an open hand, sending him crashing to the turf. That flashpoint lit the fuse. Players and staff from both sides rushed in as tempers boiled over on the sport’s biggest stage.

Paredes did not stop there. Along with teammate Thiago Almada, he is alleged to have shoved Spain midfielder Gavi to the ground amid the chaos. Those actions now sit under the microscope of world football’s governing body.

Multiple Argentina figures charged

Paredes is not alone. Right-back Nahuel Molina has been charged with two counts of assault, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala faces one count of assault after separate incidents captured on video.

Footage from the on-pitch celebrations appears to show Molina throwing a punch to the mid-section of Spain captain Rodri as the midfielder ran near the halfway line with his teammates, still in the first rush of euphoria after the final whistle.

Ayala, a respected former defender and now a senior figure on the Argentina bench, has also been drawn into the case. Video that has since emerged appears to show him allegedly punching Spain’s Dani Olmo after the game, adding another combustible layer to an already charged night.

Unsporting behavior charges for both sides

The fallout does not stop at assault allegations. FIFA has also brought unsporting behavior charges.

Molina faces an additional count of unsporting behavior, alongside Almada, who has also been cited. On the Spanish side, Gavi has been charged with one count of unsporting behavior, a reminder that the confrontation was not confined to one team.

Under FIFA’s Disciplinary Code, assault carries a minimum ban of three matches. Unsporting behavior brings at least a one-match suspension. The exact length of any sanctions will depend on how the Disciplinary Committee interprets the evidence and the severity of each act.

Independent investigation and what comes next

The case has reached this stage after an independent prosecutor, appointed by FIFA, conducted an investigation into the altercation and submitted a detailed report to the Disciplinary Committee.

Those charged will now have the chance to present their version of events. Written submissions, video evidence, and legal arguments will all feed into the committee’s deliberations before it delivers its verdict and any sanctions.

A World Cup final is supposed to be remembered for the football. Spain’s narrow 1-0 victory should have stood alone as the defining image of July 19. Instead, the night now carries a second legacy: a disciplinary battle that could shape the immediate futures of several key internationals and cast a long shadow over one of the sport’s grandest stages.
