Erling Haaland Cleared to Play for Manchester City in Community Shield

Erling Haaland has been cleared to play for Manchester City in the Community Shield against Arsenal, easing fears after his early exit from an open training session.

The Norwegian, who struck twice in three games against Arsenal last season, stepped out of Thursday’s session before the end and briefly jolted City supporters. Any concern didn’t last long.

Manager Enzo Maresca moved quickly to shut down the speculation in his pre-match press conference in Cardiff.

“He was ok, he had just a small thing behind ears, but he was ok,” the Italian said, underlining that his main striker is available for selection.

Haaland fit – but will he start?

Haaland’s fitness is not the issue. His rhythm might be.

The 24-year-old did not feature at all in pre-season after being handed an extended break following Norway’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals. No minutes, no match sharpness, and a Wembley-style curtain-raiser against Arsenal rarely allows for passengers.

That opens the door for Omar Marmoush. The forward has hit stride at exactly the right time, scoring twice in the 3-1 friendly win over Atletico Madrid and staking a serious claim to lead the line. On form alone, he is hard to ignore.

So while Haaland is ready, he may have to watch the opening exchanges from the bench as Marmoush rides his hot streak.

Midfield reshuffle as Reijnders departs

Behind them, Maresca has a more permanent problem to solve.

Tijjani Reijnders is on the verge of completing his move to Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah, with the deal expected to be wrapped up before the Arsenal clash. That forces a change in the heart of midfield and leaves Mateo Kovacic waiting for a new partner.

Rico Lewis is one candidate. He started in midfield during the win over K-League Allstars and has already shown Maresca he can handle responsibility in central areas.

Then comes the big-money option. Elliot Anderson, the £116million summer signing, is also in the frame to make his Manchester City debut. The England international has only just returned to training, though, and finds himself in the same boat as fellow recent returnees Marc Guehi and Rayan Cherki. Match fitness, again, is the question.

All of that points towards Nico Gonzalez. With minutes in his legs and a smoother pre-season behind him, he may be the one Maresca trusts from the first whistle.

Rodri waits, defence takes shape

There is positive news, with a caveat, on Rodri.

The midfield anchor is back at City after minor back surgery, but he remains in the rehabilitation phase. The timing is tight, and all signs suggest the Arsenal game will come too soon for him to be involved. City will have to manage without their metronome for at least one more outing.

At the back, another pre-season standout is making noise.

Rayan Ait-Nouri has impressed in recent weeks and is pushing hard for the left-back spot. If he gets the nod, Josko Gvardiol is likely to slide inside to partner Ruben Dias at the centre of defence, giving City a blend of aggression, control and balance across the back line.

So Haaland is fit, the goals are flowing from Marmoush, the midfield is being rebuilt on the fly, and the defence is shifting into a new shape. For Maresca, the Community Shield is no gentle friendly; it is his first real look at what this evolving City side might become.
