Thibaut Courtois Embraces Mourinho's Return to Real Madrid
Thibaut Courtois knows exactly what is coming to Valdebebas. And he sounds delighted about it.
The Belgian goalkeeper has welcomed José Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid with the calm certainty of someone who has already lived through the Portuguese’s demanding regime and come out the other side with medals in his hands.
“Mourinho is a demanding coach who prioritizes discipline and the team over individual talent. For me, those are crucial factors in winning,” Courtois told Real Madrid TV. “He's a great coach and a very approachable person. He's straightforward, and I appreciate that. I think it's the right direction to take.”
Those words carry weight. Courtois isn’t speaking in theory; he’s speaking from a title-winning past.
Old battles, familiar standards
The relationship between Courtois and Mourinho was forged in the pressure cooker of Stamford Bridge. In 2014-15, the goalkeeper returned to Chelsea after three standout years on loan at Atletico Madrid, tasked with the daunting job of succeeding Petr Cech. Mourinho backed him, installed him as the club’s No. 1 and demanded instant excellence.
The response was a Premier League title.
“We were together at Chelsea, and we won the Premier League together,” Courtois recalled. “I have fond memories of him, and I'm happy to be playing under him again. We hope to work well together and have some great years here."
That season in England shaped Courtois’ career. It hardened him, raised his standards and tied his name to Mourinho’s in the story of modern Chelsea. Now, at a very different point in both their careers, the two meet again in Madrid, hoping to recreate that ruthless, trophy-hunting rhythm in a club where the bar is even higher.
Back early, after a brutal summer
While the coaching headlines swirl around Mourinho’s return, Courtois has been dealing with a more personal battle: his body.
The veteran keeper endured a painful summer with Belgium at the World Cup. A significant injury in the quarter-final against Spain forced him off with around 20 minutes left, and Belgium’s campaign ended without him on the pitch. For a player used to being his country’s last line of resistance, watching from the sidelines cut deep.
So he made a choice. No extended break. No slow easing back.
“I came back a little earlier because with the injury I wanted to make sure everything was okay by doing individual training before joining the team. Today I already did goalkeeper training and I felt very good and happy to be back training," he explained.
It’s a small window into the mentality that Mourinho prizes: sacrifice, professionalism, the willingness to trade comfort for preparation. The kind of attitude that turns a good dressing room into a relentless one.
Mourinho’s first challenge: a scattered squad
The reunion between coach and goalkeeper comes in a complicated preseason. The 2026 World Cup has left Real Madrid’s squad scattered across time zones and recovery plans. Some players are still resting after deep runs in the tournament, others are only now filtering back through the doors at Valdebebas.
For Mourinho, it’s hardly an ideal canvas. New signings need to be integrated, fitness levels vary wildly, and the clock is already ticking toward the first competitive fixtures. One wrong step in managing workloads, and the season could start with more injuries than options.
“There are quite a few new players; we know some of them from playing against them, but the World Cup finished very late this year, and it’s not easy for the coach to get everyone integrated gradually," Courtois admitted.
That’s the reality Mourinho walks into: a giant club, high expectations, a fragmented squad, and little time. Yet standing in goal is someone who has already thrived under his command, someone who understands the demands, the discipline, the daily grind that is about to return to Madrid.
Courtois has seen what a Mourinho team looks like when it clicks. The question now is whether, in a new era and at a different club, they can build that same ruthless edge again.
