Bruno Guimaraes Heads to Spain for Newcastle's Pre-Season Camp
Bruno Guimaraes is heading to Spain to join Newcastle’s pre-season camp in La Manga, cutting across a swirl of reports that had him on the verge of an Arsenal medical.
On Sunday, the narrative looked simple enough: the Brazil midfielder was said to be closing in on an £80million move to the Emirates, with a medical pencilled in for Monday. By Monday morning, the picture had changed. Sky Sports reported that Guimaraes was instead flying to meet up with his current teammates, not his potential future ones.
According to The Chronicle, the Newcastle captain left Brazil on a commercial flight on Sunday night, bound for Spain in line with an agreement made with the club. That trip now sets up a crucial face-to-face with new head coach Matthias Jaissle, who is working with the squad in La Manga while his official confirmation as Eddie Howe’s successor waits on paperwork.
Guimaraes, understood to have informed Newcastle in July that he wants to join Arsenal, finds himself at the centre of a tug-of-war between his ambitions and his current club’s plans. Newcastle, for their part, had already started sketching out a future without him, sounding out potential replacements for their on-field leader, including Inter Milan and Croatia midfielder Petar Sucic.
The image is a familiar one this summer: a Brazil international, heavily linked with Arsenal, reporting back to his current club rather than peeling off for a transfer. Guimaraes’ return to Newcastle duty on Monday echoes that of Vinicius Jr, another key name on Arsenal’s wishlist.
Arsenal are preparing an audacious move for Vinicius Jr as his contract situation at Real Madrid drags on. The forward has less than a year left on his current deal, a gap that has encouraged the Premier League champions to test Madrid’s resolve.
Any sense that Real might be softening was quickly checked. After Madrid’s 2-2 draw with Fiorentina in Austria on Saturday, Jose Mourinho confirmed that Vinicius Jr would report back for training on Monday as scheduled, alongside Brahim Diaz and new signing Bernardo Silva. The Brazilian was duly pictured arriving at Valdebebas, back in white, not yet anywhere near red.
So Arsenal wait. And work.
The champions have moved carefully in this window, adding just two new faces so far as they gear up to defend their Premier League crown. Christos Tzolis has arrived from Club Brugge in a £34million deal to bolster the wide options, while Illan Meslier has joined on a free after leaving Leeds, adding depth and competition in goal.
The big swings, though, are still out there. Guimaraes in Spain with Newcastle. Vinicius Jr back in Madrid. Arsenal circling both, knowing that one decisive breakthrough could reshape the title race before a ball is kicked.
