Arsenal Targets Gibraltar Winger Scanlon for Youth Rebuild
Arsenal’s recruitment drive at youth level is starting to bite, and 19-year-old winger Scanlon has jumped near the top of their list.
The Leicester-born wide man, on the books at United, is emerging as a serious target as the Gunners push to strengthen the pathway beneath Mikel Arteta’s first team. He spent the second half of last season on loan at League Two side Swindon, gaining senior minutes in the fourth tier while already carrying the unusual distinction of being a regular international at his age.
Scanlon has been capped 24 times at senior level by Gibraltar, who he represents through his mother. That blend of lower-league graft and international experience has not gone unnoticed in north London.
Arsenal believe the player wants the move and do not expect personal terms to be a stumbling block. The real work lies with United. Talks over a fee are under way and there is quiet optimism at London Colney that the deal could move quickly, with the next 72 hours viewed as potentially decisive.
Key Figures in Arsenal's Pursuit
Inside Arsenal, two figures in particular have driven the push for Scanlon.
Chris Perkins, who arrived at the club in 2023 as a professional development phase scout, has tracked the winger’s progress for years. Perkins spent six years as head of academy recruitment at Derby, a period that overlapped with Scanlon’s rise through the age groups there, and he has remained a firm admirer of the teenager’s talent and mentality.
Then came a second, powerful endorsement. David Horseman, confirmed earlier this week as the new head coach of Arsenal’s Under-21s, has strongly recommended Scanlon. Horseman joined the club a year ago as elite player development coach, taking charge of the U19s in the UEFA Youth League and the U21s in the EFL Trophy, and now steps up into a more prominent role.
Before that, he had a brief spell at United, where he worked directly with Scanlon and left impressed by what he saw. His backing has added weight to Arsenal’s pursuit and underlined the sense that this is a targeted move rather than a speculative punt.
Double Raid on United
The Gunners are also trying to turn this into a double raid on United.
Alongside Scanlon, Arsenal are targeting right-back Habeeb Ogunneye. The defender spent the first half of last season on loan at Newport in League Two, gaining senior experience in the fourth tier before United recalled him in January.
Two young talents, one clear strategy. Arsenal’s youth rebuild is no longer just a talking point; it is starting to look like a plan with sharp edges.
