Arsenal Faces Travel Chaos Ahead of Champions League Match

Arsenal’s Champions League preparations were thrown off course on Tuesday as travel chaos forced the club to cancel Mikel Arteta’s pre-match press conference in Naples.

The Arsenal manager had been due to face the media at 7:15 p.m. local time ahead of Wednesday’s Group Stage clash with Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Instead, he and his squad were left waiting on the tarmac.

A major technical issue with the UK’s air traffic control system triggered widespread disruption, delaying or cancelling hundreds of flights. Arsenal’s charter was among those hit, pushing the team’s expected arrival in Naples back to around 9:30 p.m. local time, according to multiple reports.

With the team landing more than two hours after the scheduled media slot, the press conference was scrapped.

UEFA regulations normally require managers to speak to the press before Champions League fixtures, but the governing body will not sanction Arsenal, accepting that the situation lay beyond the club’s control.

So Arteta’s first public words of this European campaign will now come much closer to kick-off.

New campaign, old ambition

Arsenal open their Champions League season on Wednesday night, with kick-off set for 9 p.m. local time in Naples. The setting is fierce, the opposition seasoned, and the stakes obvious.

Arteta goes into it chasing the one prize that still eludes this new-look Arsenal. Last season, his side reached the 2025-26 final, only to lose on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain in agonising fashion. That shootout still hangs over the club’s European story.
