Arsenal Boosted by Saka and Rice's Return Ahead of Manchester City Clash

Arsenal have been handed a major lift on the eve of their season opener against Manchester City, with Mikel Arteta confirming that Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are back in the frame for selection.

The manager cut an upbeat figure in his pre-match press conference as he ran through the state of his squad, name-checking not only his two headline stars but also new signing Martin Zubimendi.

“They will be available, they trained with us today, they will train tomorrow and if they are in the condition that we expect them to be, they will be involved,” Arteta said, underlining just how central he expects that trio to be to Arsenal’s plans from the very start.

The mood around London Colney has clearly pleased him. After a demanding summer, Arteta highlighted the commitment shown by his players to return sharp and ready.

“Most of them [came back] earlier than expected, really fit with all the testing and they all seem in great condition,” he noted, a pointed nod to the standards he now sees as non-negotiable in a squad chasing Manchester City’s crown.

Defensive headaches linger

The optimism fades a little when the conversation turns to the back line. While Arsenal look stocked and dangerous in midfield and attack, the defensive picture is far more complicated.

Arteta confirmed that Jurrien Timber and William Saliba will both sit out Sunday’s clash with Enzo Maresca’s side as they continue their rehabilitation programmes. Losing two key defenders at once is a serious blow, and the news on Saliba is particularly stark.

The Frenchman is facing a lengthy spell out, with Arteta blunt in his assessment, describing it as a “long-term injury.” Timber’s situation carries more hope, but not enough to thrust him straight back into a Premier League starting XI.

“Jurrien is progressing really well,” Arteta said. “He is on the pitch, we are ramping up now with certain actions and especially the volume and the load. I think he is on a good trajectory, but there is still a few weeks to go. Wilo, as we all know, it’s more a long-term injury.”

Timber’s versatility has become a key part of Arteta’s tactical blueprint, his ability to slide across the back line and step into midfield giving Arsenal a different dimension in possession. Getting him back fully fit is not just a medical issue; it’s a strategic one.

The Dutchman is edging closer. Arteta revealed that the next week to 10 days will be decisive as Timber prepares to rejoin full group training and move from individual work to full-contact sessions on the grass.

“We have to wait and see,” Arteta explained. “He needs to start to train with the group in the next week or so hopefully, and then see how he progresses from there. It’s been a long-term issue, and we want to make sure that every step that we take is the right one, he feels right to do that, because he’s such an important player for us.”

Transfer push as deadline looms

The injuries at the back only sharpen the focus on Arsenal’s work in the market as the window ticks towards its close. Links to high-profile defensive targets continue to swirl, but Arteta refused to be drawn on specific names.

What he did not hide was the scale of the club’s ambition.

“I am not going to talk about an individual but what I can obviously tell you is [about] the ambition of the club,” he said. “It is big that we want to improve the squad, we want to evolve the squad, in order to achieve. We have detected some areas that they can be a strength in – that is what we are trying to do.”

Saka and Rice back. Zubimendi ready. Timber edging closer, Saliba sidelined, and the recruitment team still hunting solutions.

Arsenal walk into a meeting with Manchester City knowing exactly where they are strong, exactly where they are thin, and exactly what still needs to change if they are serious about finishing this season one step higher than last.
