Bruno Guimaraes Set for Arsenal Start Against Manchester City

Bruno Guimaraes is poised for his first Arsenal start – and it could come on one of English football’s traditional curtain-raising stages, against Manchester City in the Community Shield.

The Brazilian midfielder, a high-profile summer arrival, stepped off the bench in the Gunners’ final pre-season outing against Como in midweek. Now, with competitive action beginning in Cardiff on Sunday, he is pushing to go straight into Mikel Arteta’s XI.

Arsenal’s big guns return

Arsenal’s preparations have been disjointed by late returns, but the cavalry is back.

Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi are all set to rejoin the squad after missing the entire pre-season schedule. None of the trio has played a minute this summer, having only resumed training at the start of the week following extended post-World Cup breaks.

They have accelerated their work at the training ground in recent days and are now in line to feature against City.

“They will be available,” Arteta confirmed in his pre-match press conference. “They trained with us today, they will train tomorrow. If they are in the condition we expect them to be, they will be involved.”

Availability, though, is not the same as being ready to shoulder 90 minutes. Arsenal are expected to manage their workloads carefully, which pushes Guimaraes closer to a starting role in midfield.

Guimaraes to anchor a new-look core

With minutes in his legs from the Como friendly and a full pre-season behind him, Guimaraes is well placed to start at the base of midfield. The expectation is that he will line up alongside Myles Lewis-Skelly, the academy graduate who has quietly become one of the stories of Arsenal’s summer.

Lewis-Skelly started every pre-season match and has impressed with his energy and composure. Throwing him in against Manchester City, alongside a marquee signing like Guimaraes, would be a bold call – exactly the sort of statement Arteta has not shied away from in the past.

Behind them, there are fewer decisions to make. Jurrien Timber and William Saliba remain unavailable, so the defensive reshuffle continues. Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera are in line to start on the right side of the back four, with Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori expected to complete the unit in front of David Raya.

Tzolis pushes Martinelli for a place

On the flanks, the picture is more intriguing.

Christos Tzolis has been one of Arsenal’s standout performers across pre-season, repeatedly catching the eye with direct running and sharp end product. He has done everything he can to force his way into the side and will hope to get the nod over Gabriel Martinelli on the left.

Martinelli, a mainstay of recent seasons, continues to be linked with a move to Turkey. The speculation has hovered over his summer, and while Arteta has leaned on him in big games before, Tzolis’ form makes this a genuine selection dilemma.

On the right, the returning Saka gives Arsenal their familiar cutting edge, even if his minutes may be managed.

Further infield, Martin Odegaard will orchestrate as usual, with youngster Ethan Nwaneri Dowman (listed as Dowman) another creative option expected to support the attack in the line of three behind the striker.

Havertz trusted for the big occasion

Up front, Kai Havertz remains Arteta’s go-to choice when the stakes rise. The German has often been trusted in Arsenal’s biggest fixtures, and the Community Shield, against the benchmark side in English football, fits that pattern.

Arteta’s likely line-up, then, blends new signings, returning stars and summer risers into a side designed to test City’s rhythm from the very first whistle.
