Adi Hütter Backs Goalkeeper Santos Amidst Criticism
Adi Hütter is standing by his under-fire goalkeeper – at least for now.
The Eintracht Frankfurt coach confirmed that Brazilian stopper Santos will start the upcoming cup tie, even as the debate over his future rages after the 7-0 humiliation at Brentford FC.
“Santos will play,” Hütter made clear on Wednesday.
The next sentence, though, left the door wide open on the wider goalkeeping question. On the possibility of signing a new No. 1, the Austrian simply said: “Then we will see what else happens in future.”
That thumping defeat in London has dragged an old issue back into the spotlight. At 23, Santos was supposed to grow into the role. Instead, reports now claim Hütter has lost faith in him, and the search for alternatives is already being played out in public.
Potential Alternatives
- Noah Atubolu of SC Freiburg has been linked.
- Former Frankfurt favourite Lukas Hradecky, currently at AS Monaco.
Both are viewed as serious candidates if Eintracht decide to act in the market.
Hütter, though, refused to be drawn into transfer talk – not for the goalkeeper position, not for any other area of the squad. He batted away questions about possible reinforcements, keeping his focus firmly on the immediate response after Brentford.
One piece of good news: Robin Koch is expected to be available. The captain and defensive organiser suffered a slight concussion in the Brentford debacle, raising fears he might miss the cup opener. Hütter moved quickly to calm those concerns. “I assume he will play,” he said.
Behind closed doors, the reaction has been far less calm. The coaching staff and players went through the Brentford defeat in detail, and Hütter did not sugar-coat his verdict. “Something like that is absolutely not on in that form,” he stressed. The squad, he added, had been given a “clear analysis”.
The message was unmistakable: that 0-7 in London is to be treated as a warning shot, not a new normal.
Now comes the real test. Does Santos respond under pressure and reclaim trust between the posts, or does this cup tie become the first step toward a changing of the guard in Frankfurt’s goal?
