Rangers Secure Kosta Nedeljkovic on Loan from Aston Villa

Rangers have landed highly rated right-back Kosta Nedeljkovic from Aston Villa, sealing a season-long loan that comes with a £4m obligation to buy, triggered by his game time at Ibrox.

The 20-year-old arrives as part of a sweeping rebuild and is the club’s 11th summer signing, with Rangers beating off interest from several other sides to secure his signature. Key to the deal were talks with manager Derek McInnes and fellow Serbia international Vanja Dragojevic, who joined earlier in the window and helped sell the move.

A clear decision for Nedeljkovic

For Nedeljkovic, the choice was straightforward once he met McInnes.

"I am very excited, Rangers is such a big club, a big family and I am excited to join and help the team have success together," he said after completing the move.

"For me, it was an easy decision after meeting with the coach, I only wanted Rangers. It is a big opportunity and a big responsibility. I always try to be positive and work hard so I am ready to help the team."

Nedeljkovic only arrived at Villa Park in January 2024 from Red Star Belgrade and made 10 appearances for Aston Villa. Before that, he spent a season and a half on loan at RB Leipzig, picking up experience in one of Europe’s toughest leagues at a young age.

McInnes adds energy at full-back

McInnes believes Rangers have secured a modern full-back with the right mix of athleticism and edge.

"Kosta is a talented young player who we are really pleased to bring to the club," the manager said.

"He has already gained some valuable experience at a high level in England and Germany, as well as representing Serbia internationally. Kosta is an athletic and energetic full-back who is keen to get forward, but he also has a real desire to defend and compete and he will further strengthen a key area for us.

"I look forward to welcoming Kosta to Rangers, and working with him moving forward."

The deal underlines McInnes’ intent to inject youth, pace and personality into his side, particularly in wide areas where he wants his full-backs to drive the team on.

Business not finished at Ibrox

Even with Nedeljkovic through the door, Rangers’ recruitment push is far from over. Club chiefs are still in the market for a striker and a winger before the Scottish window closes on September 3.

Portland Timbers forward Kevin Kelsy and Brighton youngster Amario Cozier-Duberry are among those on the radar as Rangers look to add more firepower and creativity to complement their defensive reinforcements.

Nedeljkovic arrives with a clear remit and a pathway to a permanent deal. If he plays, the option becomes an obligation. For Rangers, that’s a bet on potential. For the player, it’s a chance to turn promise into prominence in front of an Ibrox crowd that demands – and rewards – full-blooded commitment.
