Women’s Super League 2026-27 Season Kicks Off with London City vs Manchester United

The new Women’s Super League season opens under the lights in Bromley on Friday night, and it could hardly start with a louder statement.

London City Lionesses, now suddenly one of the division’s most glamorous addresses, host Manchester United at 19:00 BST to launch the 2026-27 campaign. It is the first glimpse of a league that has grown in size, in star power and in expectation – and where everyone is chasing domestic double winners Manchester City.

Putellas, Leon, Earps: London City go all in

No club has shaken the summer quite like London City.

They pulled off the headline move of the window, landing two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas on a free transfer. After 14 years at Barcelona, 38 trophies and 10 league titles, the midfielder has swapped the Camp Nou for Bromley, turning a once-quiet club into must-watch television.

She is not coming alone. Former Barcelona team-mate Mapi Leon has joined her, adding elite pedigree to the back line, while ex-England number one Mary Earps arrives from Paris St-Germain to anchor the side in goal. It is an overhaul with a clear message: London City are done making up the numbers.

London’s shifting power and a champion’s response

Across the capital, Arsenal have made a power play of their own. The Gunners have secured double Euros-winning England midfielder Georgia Stanway from Bayern Munich, a signing that stiffens their core and signals intent in the title race.

They have, though, waved goodbye to a talisman. England forward Beth Mead has left on a free to join reigning champions Manchester City, adding yet more firepower to a side already brimming with confidence after securing their first league crown in a decade last season.

The league itself has changed shape.

Liverpool’s quiet coup and a packed calendar

Away from the headline-grabbing moves in London and Manchester, Liverpool have made a sharp piece of business of their own. They have brought in Women’s Eredivisie player of the season Mao Itamura from Feyenoord, a signing that could prove one of the shrewdest of the summer.

All of it feeds into a season that will run long and hard. The WSL kicks off on Friday, 4 September and will not close until Saturday, 22 May 2027. A winter break is locked in from 21 December to 10 January, a short pause before the run-in intensifies.

The Women’s FA Cup final is set for Saturday, 15 May 2027, a late-season showpiece that will sit just ahead of the league’s final act.
