Will England Dismiss Thomas Tuchel After World Cup Semifinal Defeat to Argentina?
England’s World Cup Run Ends in Heartbreak Against Argentina
England came within moments of reaching their first World Cup final since 1966, only to lose a 1-0 lead late against defending champions Argentina. Two goals assisted by Lionel Messi overturned the Three Lions’ advantage, sending them to face the disappointment of the third-place match instead.
The team entered the tournament with high hopes of lifting the trophy. Yet despite falling to one of the strongest squads globally, many supporters place much of the blame on manager Thomas Tuchel, criticizing his tactics and decisions as key reasons for the defeat.
Is Thomas Tuchel’s Job at Risk?
Currently, there are no official signs that England intends to part ways with Tuchel following the 2-1 semifinal loss. Still, fan sentiment has been largely negative, marking Tuchel's first World Cup appearance with the national team as underwhelming.
Tuchel told the BBC after the game, "We got too passive after we scored and conceded a lot of chances. We could not turn ball possession around and conceded so many crosses and shots. We couldn't keep the level up after we scored. We couldn't get out. Of course we wanted to go for the second goal. It was not a structural problem, we changed nothing after the goal."
Daily Mail Sports chief reporter Mike Keegan shared that Tuchel still has strong support from the Football Association. Keegan mentioned Tuchel is expected to remain as England’s manager through the 2028 European Championship.
Performance Throughout the Tournament Raised Questions
England's campaign began well with a 4-2 victory over Croatia but soon showed signs of struggle. A scoreless draw against Ghana and a slow 2-0 win over Panama revealed inconsistencies. In knockout rounds, they faced unexpected challenges, barely overcoming debutant DR Congo and needing two goals from Jude Bellingham to edge past Norway.
Against Argentina, Tuchel delayed defensive changes until the 72nd minute, a decision that puzzled fans and analysts alike. After conceding Enzo Fernandez’s equalizer, England shifted to a five-defender formation. Opinions varied on whether the change was made too soon or too late, yet most agreed it did not help the team regain control.
On Fox Sports, Tuchel explained, "I did also offensive substitutions in the last games, we just tried to help the players. We conceded [a chance] straight away and we decided to go to a back five because the gaps were far too open."
Thomas Tuchel’s Record with England
Before facing Argentina, Tuchel's record as England manager since December 2024 stood at 16 wins, 2 draws, and 3 losses. His last defeat prior to the World Cup semifinal had occurred on March 31, a 1-0 loss.
Despite the setback, the Football Association remains behind him for now. Fans, though, remain divided on whether Tuchel can lead England to future success or if a change is needed.
