Anthony Gordon's Impressive Barcelona Debut
Anthony Gordon needed only 45 minutes to remind Spain why Barcelona pushed so hard to get him.
A week before the La Liga champions kick off their title defence at Elche, the former Newcastle United forward finally pulled on the Barça shirt for the first time in a 5-2 friendly win over Basel – and the Spanish press wasted no time delivering their verdict.
A long wait, a sharp entrance
Gordon’s World Cup duties with England had pushed back his unofficial debut, stretching the anticipation in Catalonia. Barcelona supporters had seen the numbers – 17 goals in 46 games for Newcastle last season, 10 in 12 in the Champions League – but not yet the player in their colours.
That changed on Sunday.
Handed a start by Hansi Flick, Gordon lined up on the left of a front three with fellow new signing Karim Adeyemi and Raphinha through the middle. Barcelona ran out convincing winners, with goals from Adeyemi, Hamza Abdelkarim, Lamine Yamal and a brace from Jesse Bisiwu, but the spotlight sat firmly on the No. 25’s first steps as the man brought in to replace Marcus Rashford at Camp Nou.
He lasted only the first half. It was enough.
‘Game-changer’ on Spanish debut
Sport were quick and clear in their assessment, slapping a seven out of 10 on Gordon’s debut and distilling his impact into two words: “Game-changer”.
He “started very brightly”, they wrote, highlighting his explosive change of pace and relentless work without the ball. The report underlined how quickly he seemed to tune into Barcelona’s combinations, linking well with his new teammates and stretching Basel down the flank.
The intensity did dip. Sport noted that he “lost steam and influence” as the half wore on, understandable for a player still climbing back to full fitness after a summer tournament. But the paper’s conclusion was simple: only a goal was missing to “complete a brilliant debut”.
Buzz, curiosity and a ‘mixed bag’
If Sport focused on the rating, Mundo Deportivo homed in on the mood. Their piece described how the Basel friendly “satisfied fans’ curiosity” as they finally got to see Gordon and Adeyemi together, flanking Raphinha in a new-look attack.
There was, they said, a “real buzz” around Gordon’s first outing. The performance itself? A “mixed bag”, but with a distinctly positive slant.
Mundo Deportivo echoed the theme of a fast start. Gordon again was said to have begun “brightly”, repeatedly “changing pace down the wing” and showing plenty of personality in possession. He attacked the byline, swapped positions with Raphinha when the Brazilian drifted into false nine territory and, crucially, gave supporters “a taste of what awaits Barca fans”.
The verdict from the stands, according to the paper, was clear enough: the crowd left “pleased” with what they had seen from both new forwards.
Flick’s puzzle taking shape
AS widened the lens, placing Gordon’s display within Flick’s broader rebuild. With several key players short of a full pre-season, the German coach is still “fine-tuning” his side, they wrote, and Gordon’s introduction was another piece sliding into place as “the team [is] beginning to take shape”.
Despite the lack of collective rhythm, AS stressed that “the new signings shone”. Gordon, alongside Adeyemi and two-goal Bisiwu, helped drive Barcelona’s attacking threat.
The England international was described as one of two “very sharp” wingers, delivering “dangerous crosses” and constantly asking questions of Basel’s defence. The front three, led by Raphinha, still lacked “clinical finishing and a cutting edge”, but AS saw enough in their movement to suggest it “can be a very effective weapon” once the season starts.
Promise on the left, questions for the season
So the numbers from Gordon’s first 45 minutes in a Barcelona shirt will not jump off a stat sheet. No goals. No assists. Just a half of football in a pre-season friendly.
Yet across Spain’s major sports dailies, the tone was strikingly similar: this looked like a player built for the Camp Nou stage. Pace, work rate, aggression, personality on the ball – all on show, even if the legs faded before the interval.
For Flick, it is another encouraging sign that his retooled attack may not take long to click. For Barcelona fans, it is a glimpse of life after Rashford.
The real judgment starts at Elche. But on this evidence, Gordon will not be waiting long to shape Barcelona’s season.
