Barcelona sell Tommy Marques to Braga for €12 million

Barcelona have decided to draw a line under Tommy Marques’ time at the club, with the highly rated 19-year-old set to join Braga in a permanent move worth up to €12 million.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has already delivered his trademark “Here we go”, and this time it backs up a deal that signals both a financial opportunity for Barça and a career reset for the youngster.

€10m up front as Barça sign off

Braga have agreed to pay €10 million as a fixed fee, with a further €2 million available through add-ons. The agreement is in place between the clubs, and Marques has accepted the Portuguese side’s proposal.

He did so despite drawing interest from two German clubs, who had also explored a move for the Barcelona midfielder. When the offers were weighed up, the 19-year-old chose to return to Portugal and bet on regular first-team football with Braga.

For Barcelona, the deal brings in a significant fee for a player who, until now, had been officially registered with the reserve team.

From Flick’s orbit to the exit door

Marques spent much of last season on the fringes of Hansi Flick’s squad. He trained regularly with the senior group and was seen as one of the academy players closest to making the jump.

He even made his first-team debut at 18, coming on for six minutes in the 3-0 win over Mallorca at Camp Nou on February 7, before another brief appearance against Alaves. Those minutes hinted at a pathway, a sense that his breakthrough might only be a matter of time.

As this summer began, that feeling still held. With Marc Casado expected to depart, the route into the senior midfield seemed to be opening.

Then the landscape changed.

Rodri arrival shuts the door

Barcelona’s decision to push ahead with a move for Manchester City midfielder Rodri reshaped the internal competition overnight. With one of the world’s elite midfielders now set to arrive, the fight for places in the middle of the pitch only grew more intense.

For a young player like Marques, the message was clear: minutes would be scarce.

Pre-season underlined it. In the Udine triangular tournament, he featured for just 28 minutes, all of them in Barça’s second match, a 1-0 defeat to Udinese. His reduced involvement felt less like rotation and more like a signpost.

The pressure finally told. A permanent exit, rather than another season on the fringes, became the logical outcome for both club and player.

Barcelona have now secured a deal that brings in immediate cash and potential upside through bonuses, while Braga land a 19-year-old with first-team exposure at one of Europe’s giants.

For Marques, the next step is no longer theoretical. It runs through Braga — and away from a Barcelona midfield that has just become even harder to crack.
