Vozinha joins Colo Colo's title charge at 40

Colo Colo have moved to harness one of the World Cup’s most unlikely stars, confirming that 40-year-old Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha will join the Chilean giants in the coming days.

Club president Aníbal Mosa announced the deal ahead of a league match on Friday evening, outlining a straightforward plan: the veteran will fly to Chile, complete his medical, and then be unveiled at the Estadio Monumental.

“Vozinha is set to become a Colo Colo player; he will arrive in Chile in the coming days, undergo the necessary medical tests and will then be presented here at the Monumental Stadium,” Mosa told reporters.

The message was clear. Colo Colo are not signing a mascot. They are signing a man they believe can still decide matches.

From late bloomer to World Cup symbol

Born Josimar Jose Evora Dias, Vozinha’s career never followed the usual script. He did not sign his first professional contract until he was 26, a stage when many goalkeepers are already firmly established. Instead, he built his path across lesser-travelled footballing outposts: Cyprus, Slovakia, Moldova, Angola, and most recently Chaves in Portugal’s second division.

The World Cup changed everything.

Cape Verde’s fairytale run lit up the tournament, and their goalkeeper became its beating heart. Vozinha produced a string of defiant, acrobatic performances, most memorably in a gritty 0-0 group-stage draw with eventual champions Spain. He then stood tall again in a wild 3-2 extra-time defeat to finalists Argentina in the knock-out rounds, a match that cemented his status as one of the competition’s surprise heroes.

Those nights pushed him from relative obscurity into the global spotlight. The saves travelled first, then the story behind them.

A goalkeeper and a global following

On the pitch, he is a late-blooming shot-stopper. Online, he has become a phenomenon.

Helped by Brazilian influencer Casimiro, Vozinha’s social media presence exploded during and after the World Cup. His Instagram following rocketed from around 50,000 to nearly 30 million, turning a journeyman keeper into one of the most recognisable faces of the tournament.

Colo Colo are getting both sides of that package: the experienced leader for the dressing room and the unexpected global figurehead for the brand. Mosa, though, insisted the footballing logic comes first.

“He’s in very good form; that’s why we’re signing him,” the president said. No nostalgia, no charity. Form and mentality, even at 40.

Colo Colo move first

On the field, Colo Colo hardly look like a club in need of a rescue act. The 34-time Chilean champions hold a comfortable lead at the top of the table midway through the season, setting the pace in the title race with familiar authority.
