Virgil van Dijk Urges Liverpool to Keep Cody Gakpo Amid City Interest

Virgil van Dijk is in no mood to see Cody Gakpo swap Anfield red for Manchester City blue.

With the transfer window ticking towards its close and City pushing hard for the Dutch forward in a deal worth around £80 million, Liverpool’s captain left no room for doubt about where he stands.

Asked after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham whether he wanted Gakpo to stay, Van Dijk shot back: “What do you think? He's a top-class player. I think we should keep our quality players.”

That was the headline message. The subtext was just as clear: hands off.

City circling, Liverpool resisting

City are in ongoing talks over a move for Gakpo and, according to The Athletic, have become the player’s preferred destination after Tottenham Hotspur also made their interest known.

Liverpool, though, are not preparing a farewell. Not yet.

Bradley Barcola is undergoing a medical ahead of his move from Paris Saint-Germain, but even with the France international on the way, Liverpool will not sanction Gakpo’s departure in the next 48 hours unless they secure another winger before the window shuts. The club are treating it as a straight numbers and quality equation: one out only if another comes in.

Van Dijk, for his part, framed it as something much more personal.

“We'll see what the next few days bring,” he said. “I want him to stay not just because he's a top-class player, but also because he's a friend of mine. He's very important to us.”

That last line will echo around the dressing room. Important to us. Not just another saleable asset.

Barcola as proof of intent

If Gakpo is the player Liverpool are desperate to keep, Barcola is the one Van Dijk is eager to welcome.

On the verge of completing his move from PSG, the 21-year-old winger arrives with a growing reputation and the kind of pace Jürgen Klopp’s side have always prized.

"He's a good player, and he has pace," Van Dijk said. "I remember a goal he scored against Chelsea in the Champions League last season. If he comes here, he'll be welcomed with open arms."

For the captain, Barcola’s imminent arrival is more than just another signing. It is a statement that Liverpool still carry heavyweight pulling power at the top of the game.

"I don't think there's any doubt that a club like Liverpool is a very attractive destination for very good players. This is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We all know we're going through something of a transitional phase. Either you want to be part of it or you don't."

"Adding quality to the squad always makes a difference. We'll see what the next few days bring. After Tuesday, we have to fight for everything without any regrets."
